JOHN M. KRAUTH, attorney at law, Gettysburg, was born in that borough, March 3, 
1846, son of Rev. Charles Philip and Harriet (Brown) Krauth, the former a son of 
Charles J. Krauth, a native of Germany.  Rev. Charles Philip Krauth was the 
first president of Pennsylvania College, and one of the foremost educators in 
the State.  He was born in Montgomery County, Penn., May 7, 1797; was twice 
married, and by each marriage had two children, those by the first marriage 
being deceased, John M. and Sarah P. being born to the second.  President Krauth 
died May 30, 1867, and his widow and her daughter now reside with John M.  (For 
a full sketch of President Krauth the reader is referred to the records of the 
college.)  Our subject, at the age of eighteen, graduated from the Pennsylvania 
College, and in 1864, enlisted in the United States Signal Service, serving 
until August, 1865.  He read law under the instruction of the Hon. D. 
McConaughy, of Gettysburg, was admitted to the bar November 18, 1867, and has 
since followed the fortunes of that profession.  From 1869 to 1873 he served as 
assistant assessor of internal revenue; was a member of the school board from 
1869 to 1886, when he resigned; and from 1877 to 1885 he served as postmaster of 
Gettysburg, and was elected district attorney of Adams County, in November, 
1885.  October 12, 1875, Mr. Krauth was married to Mary J., daughter of John S. 
Crawford, of Scotch descent, and to this union have been born the following 
named children:  Harriet B., Elizabeth S. and Anna C. The parents are members of 
the Lutheran Church.  Mr. Krauth is a director and secretary of the Gettysburg 
Battlefield Memorial Association and a member of post No. 9, G. A. R.  He is a 
Master Mason, a member of Lodge No. 336.
