Confirm through another source.) May 8, 1861 Adams Co. Volunteers—The volunteers from this county are still at York. They have been attached to the 2nd Regiment, Col. Stambaugh of Chambersburg and are Company E. At last account from there, they were all well and daily await marching orders. Lt. Fuhnestock and others made a flying visit home Saturday having a 48 hour furlough. They returned Monday morning. They say they are getting along well in camp. God be with them. The Home Guards-On Monday last a large number of the Home Guards of Adams County met at the Armory in Gettysburg. Captain Diehl of Franklin Twp., was called to the chair. Capt. McPherson is at Congress but has not forgotten the boys of the Adams Infantry. Lt. Herron is not very well but I hope he will soon be able to eat his rations. Corp. Resser is appointed postmaster of the camp or regimental postmaster. The camp is in a beautiful location being at the fairgrounds, having an excellent hospital and every other facility to make it pleasant and healthy, overlooking the town of West Chester. We are now required to increase our number to 101 men rank and file. Sgts. Stewart and Minnick have been sent home to recruit 24 more men. Yours Respectfully A Friend of Old Adams July 31, 1861 The 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Col. Roberts, left Camp Wayne Sunday, 21st inst., and reached Harrisburg that evening. The next day they arrived at Bolt and encamped at Camp Carroll, near Mt. Clare Depot. They remained there until Saturday last when they left for Annapolis and Annapolis Junction—six companies at the former place and four at the latter. The Adams Infantry are at the Junction of the Annapolis Branch Railroad with the Bolt and Washington Railroad. The Adams Infantry is Company B. Aug. 12, 1861 Died, on the 7th inst., at Hagerstown, Md., Captain H. Gates Myers, of Hanover, aged 30 years, 5 months and 11 days. The deceased entered the three month service of the government as captain of the Marion Rifles of Hanover. His health was good throughout the encampment at York and Chambersburg and on the march until the army crossed the Potomac. He reached Martinsburg with his regiment but was there taken with bilious fever. He was soon after removed to the residence of a friend near Hagerstown where he breathed his last on Wednesday evening, 7th inst. He leaves an amiable wife and interesting children with many relatives and friends to mourn his early loss. He was the son of Henry Myers, Esq., of New Chester and brother of H.J. Myers, Esq., member of the legislature from this county. His remains were interred at Pines Church near New Chester on Saturday last with military honors, the Marion Rifles, the Hanover Infantry, and Border Guards of Hanover and Independent Blues and Adams Rifles of Gettysburg being present. Lt. Bailey of Company B, 1st Regiment, arrived here Monday last and will spend a few days among us. He is in excellent health and the company is getting along nicely. They are staying at Annapolis Junction. A new military company, the Fairfield Zouaves, was organized on the 3rd inst. Charles Knox, late of the 12th N.Y. was elected captain; Ebeneezer McGinley 1st Lt. and E.T. Rinehart 2nd Lt., and J.T. Sullivan 3rd Lt. August 21, 1861 Extract from Letter from Camp (Adams Infantry) Annapolis Junction, Aug. 10, 1861 The members of the company are in fine health—no one sick. All are busy and in good condition. The captain returned on Thursday from Washington where he had been detained by sickness since the adjournment of Congress. We expect Lt. Bailey with recruits on Monday next. Lt. Herron has tendered his resignation which has been accepted. Several Adams County friends have been here to see us; Mr. Brandon and Benjamin Gardner of Petersburg; Mr. Keim of Arendtsville and Col. J.L. Tate of Gettysburg. The boys enjoy their home friends. Jacob A. Gardner, Esq., paid the company (Company B, Adams Inf.) a visit today and was warmly welcomed. He has done many acts of kindness showing how deep his feelings and interest. J. Durbin, Saddler, of York Springs, has been elected 2nd Lt. of Company B. The Independent Blues have returned to their homes, rested, and have arranged their business and are about re-organized and re-enlisted for the war. Captain McPherson has been attached to General McCall’s staff at headquarters at Camp Tennally, Washington City and consequently has resigned his appointment to Company B. The position taken is one of responsibility. Jeff Myers, Sam Eyster, Phillip Hollinger and several others have received certificates of disability and are no doubt receiving their discharges before long. December 4, 1861 Disease is making its mark among our gallant soldiers now in camp and sometimes results in death. Among those who have lately been removed from earth, we regret to record the name of a member of Captain Bailey’s Company, Jesse Shank, who died at Camp Pierpont near Washington on Sunday, 24th ult. He was about 23 years and resided near York Springs. His remains were brought to Petersburg for interment. Died, on Thursday last, Forrest Little, son of Erastus(?) Z. Little, of this place, a member of Capt. Martin’s Company at Luthersville. He was taken ill suddenly and was removed to the hospital and every attention given to him but he died on Saturday evening. His body was brought home on Monday and interred yesterday in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors by Adams Rifles, Capt. McConaughy being the escort. He was about 17 or 18. Lt. Washington Morrison has been elected 1st Lieutenant of the company in the room of Lt. Annan, deceased; and Albert Hunter 2nd Lieutenant in the room of Lt. Morrison, promoted. A Tribute of Respect was paid by Capt. John Horner’s Cavalry Company on the death of Lt. John M. Annan, who was killed by the accidental discharge of a carbine in the hands of one of the members of the company. We notice that Thaddeus S. Clarkson, formerly of our town, has been promoted to Captain in Col. Bell’s Cavalry Regiment at Chicago. He has been in the service since the beginning of the war. Our citizens will remember him as a lad but he is now a large, bold, six footer. The “Body Guard” originally intended for General Anderson has been organized and drilled at the Carlisle barracks and left on Monday week for Kentucky where they are entering service under General Buell, the successor of General Anderson, whose health has been too feeble for active service at the present. James Lashelle, son of Daniel Lashelle of this borough and the son of Josiah Benner, Esq., of this vicinity belong to the “Guard”. The Rock Creek Rangers have elected Lt. Witherow captain in room of Captain Horner; Henry Lott, Jr., 1st lieutenant; and E.R. Tawney 2nd lieutenant. Dec. 18, 1861 Letter from Camp Frederick Barracks, Dec. 10 Dear Sir: I embrace this opportunity of writing you a few lines. We are still here in our tents at the east end of Frederick Barracks and in all probability will winter here. This is the best place we can get for stabling. Our company (Keystone Rangers) are under the immediate command of Major General Barker. We have been doing duty as bearers of dispatches between different camps for the last few days. Our tents are being badly torn up by wind. Albert M. Hunter, formerly of Gettysburg, has been elected 2nd lieutenant of our company in place of Lt. J.M. Annan, deceased. Lt. Hunter is very popular with the men. He is a good officer and none know him but to love him. J.H.C.W. (Transcriber’s note, in looking over the roster, the above letter was probably written by Joseph H.C. Wills.) It is our painful duty to record the death of George Washington Myers, another member of Captain Bailey’s company of the P.R.C., stationed near Washington. He died in camp on the 3rd inst., of a fever. He resided near Petersburg, York Springs, to which place his remains were sent for interment. He was about 23(?) 28(?) years of age and was much loved by the officers and men. This is the third death which has occurred from that immediate neighborhood among the volunteers. December 25, 1861 Wm. Loeffler of Mummasburg, has been appointed hospital steward, in the 4th Regiment of Meade’s Brigade, McCall’s Division, Pennsylvania Reserve Corps. Sept. 30, 1861 Since the promotion of Capt. Buehler to major, 1st lt. Wm. J. Martin has been elected captain of the company; James Adair has been promoted to 1st Lt., and Thomas Norris to 2nd Lt., and Wm. F. Baker to 1st Sgt.
