Articles from the Gettysburg Adams Sentinel December, 1817 through October, 1818 Transcriber’s Note: Early newspapers had very little local news; few marriage or birth announcements and the ones that were printed were brief; newspapers covered national and international news and politics. However, information can be found in these early newspapers by looking at: 1. Court Records—You can determine approximately when an ancestor died, if you do not know, from the court records, and especially the Orphan’s Court Records, printed in the later 1820’s sometimes contained all the names and married names of the children 2. Lists of letters left at the local post offices can let you know if an ancestor was in the area as of a certain point in time 3. Merchant ads tell you when firms opened and when partnerships were dissolved 4. In ads for land for sale, by reading between the lines you can assess the wealth or lack of wealth of an ancestor—was their abode a log abode (recent), a log a abode of two stories (improvements made); frame or stone (indicates more permanency); their acreage and the improvements they had made, i.e., acres under cultivation, may indicate they had been there a long time, all pre-supposing, of course, they had been the first owners. Also, the presence of orchards lends itself to long tenancy if they were the first owners. 5. Sheriff’s Sale of Land may indicate to you if land had been seized from your ancestor to pay debts or the estate of the deceased had not been sufficient to pay off creditors. May people fell in debt to dry goods stores or other stores when they bought on credit. 6. Also check all notices of court records and estate sales for the names of executors and administrators—often these are sons and sons-in-law, although they could also be lawyers December 17, 1817 Died, on the 2nd inst., at the house of Charles Stewart in Menallen Twp., Mrs. Martha M. May 27, 1818 December 13, 1817 Notices being indiscriminately made, as the causes which give them origin, the eye of the unrelated reader is accustomed to passing them over. And as every man’s importance is proportionate to the sphere of his acquaintance and his utility, so his death excites a like melancholy interest. Hence the death of Samuel Gilliland is not to be viewed as a subject of mere domestic sorrow, his life having been dedicated to his country in the exercise of active humanity to his suffering fellow citizens, his loss will be generally felt. He was a native of this county, born July 31, 1780. After receiving the rudiments of education preparatory to the practice of medicine, he began the duties of his profession in this place which, however, he did not long confine himself but sought and obtained an appointment of surgeon’s assistant in the U.S. Navy in which capacity he remained three years, from June of 1809 to May of 1812. During this period, he made several visits to England, France and some other parts of Europe. War having been declared between the U.S. and England, he considered that the Army would afford him a more simple theater for the exercise of his profession and he therefore abandoned the Navy and accepted a post as surgeon to the 15th (?) 16th (?) Regiment, Infantry. In this new situation, he was not destined to remain long inactive. His regiment was, at an early period of the war, ordered to the Canada frontier. The encounters with the enemy and the hostility of the climate furnished uninterrupted employment to the surgeon. Exposed to the inclemency of an inhospitable climate, suffering equally with the others the privations incident to their peculiar sites; perpetually liable to be harassed by the enemy; and constantly engaged in the duties of his station with no other companions but his sick and wounded patients; he had no solace, no encouragement except the still small voice of conscience, which supported him. Peace being restored, he returned to private practice in this place. Some few months afterwards, accident brought him the acquaintance, at the house of a patient, to an amiable young lady who became his wife. He had hoped to glide through many serene and happy years. But alas! He was attacked by the infirmity of several viscera; he knew well its tendency and resigned himself to his approaching destiny which was accomplished on the evening of Tuesday, 16th inst. As a companion he was cheerful and urbane; his conversation was entirely replete with anecdote from his various intercourse with the world, his readings, his observations and reflections. He had storied his mind with a vast variety of information which had longer existence been permitted might have rendered him not only greatly useful but highly ornamental. In pursuance of the last will and testament of Susannah Dill, deceased, will be offered for sale Saturday, 14th Feb., a house and lot in Millers Town, Adams Co. The house is two stories high and with a back building attached to it and there is also a good stable Thomas McKee and John Kerr, Executors Jan. 21, 1818 Married, on Thursday, 8th inst., by Rev.
