He was out coon hunting and in crossing a fence, the gun discharged. The ball lodged in his forehead causing instant death. We have to record the death of another of our aged and respected citizens, George Shryock who died on Monday evening last. He has resided in our midst for many years and has ever sustained a high and unsullied reputation. As a citizen he was universally esteemed and as an active and worthy member of the church (2nd Lutheran) he had few equals. (See further notice April 10 issue.) Married, on the 26th ult., by Rev. Died, on the 22nd ult., at Fairfield, Georgette S., infant daughter of Col. R.C. and E.C. Swope, two weeks. Died, on Wednesday, 22nd ult., in Hampton, Isaac Yount, aged about 45. Died, on the 27th ult., in this place, Mrs. Rachel Sweeney, 86 years, 7 months, 8 days. Died, on the 20th (?) 26th (?) ult., in Mount Joy Twp., Catherine Mills, wife of Abner Mills, aged about 45. Died, at Knoxville, Illinois, Thursday, 7th ult., of diphtheria, Emma Charlotte, only daughter of E.M. Helen Eiken, in the 9th year of her age. Died, on Sunday, 1st inst., at Emmitsburg, Mrs. Theresa S - - - ffer, (partially illegible), aged 26(?). During the last week, this deeply afflicted family has followed three of their number to the silent grave: on the 8th March, at the residence of Joseph A. Wierman, near Petersburg, (Y.S.), Willie W., infant son of Thomas J. and Susan V. Stephens, 11(?) weeks. April 10, 1861 Mr. Shryock, whose death was mentioned last week, was a member of the 1st Lutheran (St. James) Church not the 2nd as mentioned by us. Our deceased friend was a valued director of the Seminary, a trustee of the college and an active and attentive superintendent of the Sabbath School at St. James Church. A young man named John Flynn, was killed instantly on Saturday morning at St. James switch on the Northern Central Railroad. He made a spring for one of the cars of the burden train near the locomotive when he slipped and ten freight cars passed over his bocy mangling it terribly. Died at Newville, Cumberland Co., on the 4th inst., Mrs. Susannah Latshaw, wife of Samuel Latshaw and daughter of Jacob Shank of Arendtsville, aged 32 years, 9 days. Died, near the Upper Bermudian Church on the 28th ult., Mrs. Sarah Sterner, consort of Wm. Sterner, in the (age illegible, starts with a ‘6’) year of her age. Died, at New Chester, on the 29th ult., Willis Myers, son of Samuel Thomas, aged 1 year, 9 months, 14 days. Died, on March 30, Mrs. Catherine Peace in the 72nd year of her age. Died, on the 1st inst., at the residence of her mother in Eaton, Preble Co., Ohio after a protracted illness, of about one year duration, Miss Julia Rosaline Blythe, aged 21 years, 6 months, 12 days. She bore her sufferings with Christian fortitude and passed through the death struggle with all the calmness of an infant’s slumber. She was born in Fairfield, Adams Co., Pa., Sept. 19, 1839. Plant, resigned Mrs. Wendell, wife of Jacob Wendell, two miles from Hanover, met her death the week before last in a distressing manner. She was engaged with her husband in burning brush when the flames caught her clothing and before her husband could reach her, she was so terribly burned that she died a few days afterward, having suffered great agony. The deceased was a consistent member of the German Reformed Church of that place and her pastor Rev. Mr. Krebs preached a very appropriate sermon on the occasion of her death. Died, on the 20th June, James McCleary of Freedom Twp., in the 91st year of her age. He was a worthy and esteemed citizen and passed a long and reputable life. He was a very hale and hearty man until he received an injury a few days before he died which brought his protracted existence to a speedy end. Died, Sunday morning, June 30, of scarlet fever, Margaret, daughter of Dr. Samuel Cronce of Straban Twp., aged 9 years, 10 months and 17 days. Died, on the 21st ult., of scarlet fever, Mary Bell, aged about 6 years; on the 22nd ult., Caroline Louise, aged about six years, children of Henry Landis of Fairfield. Died, on the 26th ult., at Mt. Pleasant Twp., Martha Elizabeth daughter of Joseph and Sarah J. Coshun, aged one year, three months, twenty nine days. Died, at Hampton, Thursday, 27th ult., Louisa Jane, daughter of Wm. C. and Sydney C. Beck, aged five years nine months. Died, on the 27th ult., at Hamiltonban Twp., after a protracted illness of typhoid fever, Dillmena, daughter of William and Mary Ann Culp, aged 6 years, 8 months, 2 days. Died, on the 26th ult., Francis N., son of Jacob Klunk, Germany Twp., in the 10th year of his age. His death resulted from a bad and fatal accident. During the afternoon of the 23rd, while playing in the family barn, with another boy of his age, making a miss-step, fell to the threshing floor a distance of twelve feet, falling directly on his head and crushing his skull to a frightful extent. He lingered for 48 hours when death relieved him from his excruciating suffering. Departed this life on June 29, at the residence of her husband in Hamiltonban Twp., Margaret Barbara Carolina, wife of George Tate and eldest daughter of Christian Rindlaub of Straban Twp., 32 years, 8 months and 9 days. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved husband and the afflicted children—one of whom is quite an infant. Truly, the Lord’s ways are not our ways. Her end was peace. July 12, 1861 Married, by Rev. September 23, 1861 On Tuesday morning last the barn of Henry Hoffman of Straban Twp., was struck by lightening and entirely consumed. The horses were saved. We have not heard the particulars but we understand the loss is heavy. October 14, 1861 Died, on the 11th inst., Kenrick Francis, son of Charles K and Catherine Orendorff, five months, 3 days. October 14, 1861 (Compiler) Weeks Sanders, aged about 15 years, son of Widow Sanders of this place, met with a shocking accident on Wednesday evening which resulted in almost instant death. He had been employed on the farm of Edward Hall in Cumberland Twp., and was in the field with him and several other workmen cutting off corn. They had with them a loaded gun which was left standing at the fence. While they were at work, upon leaving the field in the evening, the lad proceeded to get the gun. A report was heard and upon Mr. Hall going to the spot he found the boy had been shot—the whole contents of the gun entering his mouth producing almost instant death. It is supposed that in crossing the fence the trigger caught on the rail, thus producing the accidental discharge of the gun. We learn that Mrs. Abby, a lady residing at Abbotstown, Adams Co., met with her death under distressing circumstances on Tuesday morning last. She had been in ill health for some time past and on the morning above mentioned she awoke about 5:00 and left her home. Not returning in what was regarded as a reasonable time her friends became uneasy. Search was made in the neighborhood and her body was discovered in a well near her own property; life was extinct. He was the seventh son born, on the 7th day of the month, the seventh day of the week and attained the age of seven years, eleven months and seven days. Died, near Petersburg, on Oct. 13, Mrs. Hannah S. Bream, wife of John P. Bream, aged 26 years, 8 months, 17 days. The death of the deceased has cast a gloom over the entire community. She has left a kind and faithful husband, affectionate parents and loving brothers and sisters and a large number of friends. She was baptized in infancy and early confirmed as a member of the Lutheran Church and has ever tried to live an upright, Christian life. She passed away on the Sabbath morning to enjoy an eternal Sabbath. November 6, 1861 Married, on the 24th ult., by Rev. J.K. November 13, 1861 Sheriff Wolf, on Saturday last, sold the following property: Property of Jacob Musser, Tyrone Twp., to Samuel Deardorff at $400 Property of John Werner in Gettysburg to John Cole, $1,450 Property of Valentine Werner in Gettysburg to Fahnestock Brothers, $1,350 On Tuesday last, Louis Houck, residing in West. Mannheim Twp., near the Bolt Turnpike, when hauling wood, was seized with a falling fit and during the attack got under the wagon and the wheels passed over his head, killing him instantly. The deceased was a son of Henry Houck and was himself a man of family, leaving a wife and three children. Wills) December 25, 1861 On Thursday morning last, while her mother was in the barn milking, a little daughter of Jeremiah Gulden, residing a few miles below this place, on the line of the railroad, was burned to death. When her mother returned she found her lying on the floor dead, burned to a crisp—presenting a very frightening spectacle. She was about five years old. The first and final account of Wm. A.
