Died, on Saturday last, Christopher Bucher of Franklin Twp., 82(?) years, 7 months, 27 days.

Died, at Salem, Ohio, on the 7th inst., John Fisher, in the 28th year of his age and on the 9th inst., at the same place, Mrs. Cynthia Fisher, wife of John Fisher, both formerly of this place.

Died, on the 22nd inst., in Butler Twp., Samuel Augustus, son of Mr. McLaughlin, 13(?) years, 2 months, 21(?) days.

Died, on Saturday last, in Hampton, Mrs. Elizabeth Corsyth(?), 87 years, 9 months, 10 days.

July 8, 1862

On the 24th ult., Drs. J.H. Marsdun of this county and W.H. Cook of Carlisle extirpated with the knife a large, malignant tumor from the lower eyelid of Joshua Ross of Huntington Twp.  The patient was kept under the influence of chloroform during the operation and suffered no pain.  Comparatively little deformity has resulted considering the size of the tumor.

Married, on the 1st July, at the residence of F.N.W. Bowers of Petersburg, Y.S., by Rev. James F. Potter, Wm. Ickes of Mt. Holly Springs, to Lydia Jane Wierman, daughter of Jas. Wierman, York Springs.

Died, on the 27th ult., at Menallen Twp., Samuel Harlan, Jr., 66 years, 9 months, 10 days.

Died, on Sunday last after a long illness, Mrs. Christian Frazer, wife of Alexander Frazer, aged 28(?) years, 2 months, 2 days.

Died, on the 7th inst., at Tyrone Twp., of diphtheria, Sarah Ellen, daughter of J. (?) and Margaret(?) Wright, aged nearly 14 years.

Died, on Sunday evening week, in Chambersburg, John A. Little, formerly of this place, aged about 42.

Died, on the 22nd June of diphtheria, Samuel A. McLaughlin, of Butler Twp., aged 13(?) years, 2 months and 24 days.

Died, on Friday afternoon last, Henry Stock, Sr., Hamilton Twp., 79 years, 22 days.

Died, on Thursday last, in this place, Charles Henry Gates, son of Henry G. and Elizabeth Carr, aged about ten weeks.

Died on the 30th June, at Heidlersburg, Mary, daughter of Hezekiah Snyder, 11 years, 21 days.

Died, on the 2nd inst., Mrs. Susanna Spangler, 65(?) years, 15 days.

July 22, 1862

On Friday last, near Hanover, Mr. Izenkraut, while assisting in cutting grain on the farm of John Bowman, with one of the patent reapers, was accidentally thrown in front of the machine and had both feet severed above the ankles by coming in contact with the knives.  We believe he was standing on the machine raking and in crossing a gutter he was precipitated forward and in front and fell under the machine.  At last account he was still living.

Robert H. Longwell of this place has been appointed a medical cadet.  Cadets act as dressers of wounds in the hospital and the field service for one year.

Married, on the 3rd inst., by the same, George Cashman to Elizabeth Markly, both of Abbotstown.

Died, Thursday night last, very suddenly, at New Chester, Wm. Henry aged about 40.

Died, on Wednesday last, in this place, James Melchior, an interesting son of Robert and Emily Shends, aged 9 years, 8(?) months and 9 days.

August 5, 1862

A little son of Reuben Draurbaugh(?) was drowned in the head race of Peter Wolford’s mill in Latimore Twp., on Saturday evening last.  We have no particulars.

Died, on the 27th ult., at Conewago Twp., Albert Berkley, aged about 28.

Died, on Monday morning in Cumberland Twp., Mrs. Elizabeth Bieghly(?), aged about (illegible, but the first number is an ‘8’).

Died, in Philadelphia, on Wednesday last, in the (age illegible, maybe 52nd) year of her age, Mrs. Martha D. Snow, formerly of Gettysburg, and daughter of the late Edward J. Stiles, Esq.

August 12, 1862

Levi Beard of Franklin Twp., met his death in a most distressing manner on last Friday week.  He was engaged in raking hay and driving in a nest of hornets who immediately made an attack on the horse.  The animal became maddened with the stings and in his endeavors to extricate him from the gears, he was so severely kicked that he died within 24 hours.

November 4, 1862

Yesterday at the rear of the stabling of the Eagle Hotel, some difference occurred between a young man named Moses Degraff and another person.  Degrovv flourished a knife and was making threats.  John Knox, a respectable citizen of Hamiltonban Twp., happened to be there and, it appears, drew a revolver for some reason or other and it was discharged, he knows not how, the load passing through the head of Degraff and causing his death in a few hours.  Mr. Knox immediately gave himself to the authorities, disclaiming all intention of injury to Degraff and that the discharge of the pistol was accidental.  This is the universal opinion, we believe.  He went on, this morning, to York to see Judge Fisher with a view to being released on bond.

Commonwealth Versus John Knox—Voluntary Manslaughter
This melancholy affair occurred on the 3rd inst., the day the drafted men assembled in this place—resulting in the death of Moses Degraff from a ball discharged from a pistol in the hands of the accused.  The trial commenced Thursday afternoon and concluded on Saturday about noon—when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty.

Died, in Christ and in peace in Pennsylvania College of typhoid fever on Nov. 25, Frederick E. Brunner of Stonersville, Berks Co, Pa. The deceased at the time of his death was a member of the senior class and was pursuing his studies with a view of entering the ministry.  God has, however, unexpectedly called him from these scenes of trial and sorrow to the joys of a better world.

December 9, 1862

We learn that John Carbaugh, Esq., of Franklin Twp., was frozen to death Saturday night in a field near his residence.  He was in Gettysburg to see his son off in the cars in the afternoon, his son being one of the drafted soldiers.  He went in a buggy with a friend to Hilltown and then started crossing the field to his home and from the inclemency of the night, perished.  He was not found until Sunday evening.

Dec. 16, 1862

Adolphus Flenner of Liberty Twp., was killed instantly on the 6th inst., on the road between Fairfield and Emmitsburg.  He was driving a wagon and in going downhill it uncoupled and the horses ran away with the front carriage.  It is thought that a barrel of cider which was on the wagon, rolled upon him breaking his neck and back and causing instant death.  He leaves a wife and several small children to mourn his sad death.

Married, on Christmas eve, at the residence of the bride’s father, Rev. L.T. Williams, Wm. H. Clutz to Lizzie L. Gettier, all of Adams Co.

Died, on the 27th inst., at the residence of his son, John Bushman, Henry Bushman, aged 75 years, 10 months, 5 days.

Died, on the 18th inst., Wm. C., and on the 19th Maggie Virginia, children of Henry B. Wisner (or Wesner or Wenner), Straban Twp.  These lovely children died of diphtheria only a few hours apart and were buried in the same grave.  May God in His mercy comfort the hearts of the sorrowing parents.

Died, on the 16th December, John Stewart Tudor, son of Wm. A. and Charlotte Tudor, aged 1 years, 11 months, 25 days.
