Died, on Saturday last, in Hampton, Mrs. Elizabeth Corsyth(?), 87 years, 9 months, 10 days. July 8, 1862 On the 24th ult., Drs. J.H. Marsdun of this county and W.H. Cook of Carlisle extirpated with the knife a large, malignant tumor from the lower eyelid of Joshua Ross of Huntington Twp. The patient was kept under the influence of chloroform during the operation and suffered no pain. Comparatively little deformity has resulted considering the size of the tumor. July 22, 1862 On Friday last, near Hanover, Mr. Izenkraut, while assisting in cutting grain on the farm of John Bowman, with one of the patent reapers, was accidentally thrown in front of the machine and had both feet severed above the ankles by coming in contact with the knives. We believe he was standing on the machine raking and in crossing a gutter he was precipitated forward and in front and fell under the machine. At last account he was still living. Robert H. Longwell of this place has been appointed a medical cadet. Cadets act as dressers of wounds in the hospital and the field service for one year. Married, on the 24th inst., by Rev. E.H. August 12, 1862 Levi Beard of Franklin Twp., met his death in a most distressing manner on last Friday week. He was engaged in raking hay and driving in a nest of hornets who immediately made an attack on the horse. November 4, 1862 Yesterday at the rear of the stabling of the Eagle Hotel, some difference occurred between a young man named Moses Degraff and another person. Degrovv flourished a knife and was making threats. John Knox, a respectable citizen of Hamiltonban Twp., happened to be there and, it appears, drew a revolver for some reason or other and it was discharged, he knows not how, the load passing through the head of Degraff and causing his death in a few hours. Mr. Knox immediately gave himself to the authorities, disclaiming all intention of injury to Degraff and that the discharge of the pistol was accidental. This is the universal opinion, we believe. Commonwealth Versus John Knox—Voluntary Manslaughter This melancholy affair occurred on the 3rd inst., the day the drafted men assembled in this place—resulting in the death of Moses Degraff from a ball discharged from a pistol in the hands of the accused. The deceased at the time of his death was a member of the senior class and was pursuing his studies with a view of entering the ministry. God has, however, unexpectedly called him from these scenes of trial and sorrow to the joys of a better world. December 9, 1862 We learn that John Carbaugh, Esq., of Franklin Twp., was frozen to death Saturday night in a field near his residence. He was in Gettysburg to see his son off in the cars in the afternoon, his son being one of the drafted soldiers. He went in a buggy with a friend to Hilltown and then started crossing the field to his home and from the inclemency of the night, perished. He was not found until Sunday evening. Dec. 16, 1862 Adolphus Flenner of Liberty Twp., was killed instantly on the 6th inst., on the road between Fairfield and Emmitsburg. He was driving a wagon and in going downhill it uncoupled and the horses ran away with the front carriage. It is thought that a barrel of cider which was on the wagon, rolled upon him breaking his neck and back and causing instant death. He leaves a wife and several small children to mourn his sad death.
