January 12, 1864

On Wednesday last, the house and lot of David McMillan, Sr., Chambersburg Street, were 
sold at public auction for $1,310 to Hiram Mickley

On Thursday week, Jacob McGuigan, son of Mr. McGuigan of Cumberland Twp., while 
attending to the horse in the stable, was so badly kicked by one of them that at last accounts 
his life was despaired of.

Married, on the evening of the 31st ult., at the residence of John Rupp, by Rev. A. Essick, 
John C. Wills to Martha E. Martin, all of this place.

Married, on the 29th December, at the Lutheran parsonage in Arendtsville, by Rev. J. miller, 
Amos W. Orner to Julia Ann Beemer (or Beamer) both of Menallen Twp.

(illegible, two numbers, the first is an ‘8’).

Died, at Taneytown, Md., Dec. 29, Miss Mary McKenny, formerly of Mt. Joy Twp., aged 
33(?) years, 7 months, 12 days.  She lived beloved and died lamented.

Died, at Upton, Dec. 8, Peter Evers, formerly of this place, aged 26 years, 2 months, 21 
days.

Died, on the 22nd ult., in Freedom Twp., Miss Abigail A. Pottorff, aged 19 years, 3 months, 
22 days.

Died, on the 21st ult., Amelia Rebecca Culp, daughter of George and Elizabeth Culp of 
Cumberland Twp., aged 14 years, 2 months, 3 days.

Died, at Westminster on the 18th ult., Prof. C. Burk, aged (illegible, two numbers, the 
second is a ‘3’) years, 10 months, 16 days.

Died, on last Monday week, in this place, Mrs. Elizabeth Toot Carr, wife of H.G. Carr, 
aged 39 years, 8 months, 3 days.

Died, on Monday, 21st December, at the residence of Mr.(?) Mrs.(?) Wm. Peters of Butler 
Twp., Jacob B. Lease, in the 26th year of his age.  It is with sorrow that we record the death 
of so amiable, talented and useful man and Christian gentleman in the prime of his youth.  
A few years ago he left the comfort of a mother’s home in the state of Ohio and came to 
this place among his friends to recuperate his health.  When but a youth he was afflicted 
with plathisic(?).  Before his bodily infirmity incapacitated him for manual labors and being 
of an active and industrious disposition, his attention was turned to the cultivation of his 
mind that he might be able to fill some useful position in society and the world.  Nature and 
liberal education seemed to have well qualified him to teaching, having for some years 
been engaged in this useful though irksome vocation and he has only gained for himself a 
name and character that is living though he is dead, but a proficiency in the art and theory 
of teaching that few indeed obtain.  He was dearly beloved by his pupils and much 
esteemed by all the parents.  In his demise, the friends of education have lost a warm friend.  
The Lord has made of him in a better and holier work.  Peace to his ashes.  M.

Died, on Friday last in this borough, Michael Newman, in the 86th year of his age.

Died, near Uniontown, Md., on Friday last, Mrs. Julia Ann, wife of Samuel Bricker 
(formerly of this place), aged 30(?) years, (?) months, 7(?) days.

Died, on the following day, George Andrew, eldest son of Samuel Bricker, 17 years, 9 
months, 5 days.

Died, on the 8th November last, at Boonsboro, Maryland, Mrs. Madaline Wet- - ght 
(partially illegible last name), (sister to Leonard Bricker, near this place), 76 years, 6 
months, 20 days.

Died, on the 2nd Jan., at Duncannon, Perry Co., Pennsylvania, of typhoid fever, Robert 
Scott King, Esq., 60 years, 12 days.  The deceased spend his early life in Gettysburg where 
he studied law under the celebrated Thaddeus Stevens.  During the greater part of his life he 
has been engaged in the iron business and for the last 7 years as agent of the Pennsylvania 
Railroad Company at Duncannon, Pa.  He was emphatically a useful man and his death is 
deplored by the whole community in whose midst he has so long resided. He was an ardent 
patriot and always ready to do anything which the interest of the country demanded.  The 
cause of temperance always had in him an enthusiastic advocate.  He was a bright ornament 
of the I.O.O.F. to which he belonged.  He took a deep interest in and did much for the 
benevolent enterprise of the age.  The poor always had in him a friend and helper.  His pew 
in church was seldom if ever vacant.  He was one of the kindest and truest of husbands and 
fathers.  His work being done he suddenly “dropped into the lap of God, lamented by all 
but he being dead yet speaketh by his good works and deeds”.

John M. Wolf of Abbotstown has received a clerkship in Washington.

Philip Doerson has sold his fine residence on York Street to Hon. James Wilson for 
$1,3000.

James Wilson (shoe maker) has disposed of his house and lot on East Middle Street to 
James A. Grimes for $575.

February 2, 1864

Buckingham, daughter of the late Ezekiel Buckingham of Gettysburg.

We regret to announce the death of our esteemed friend, Samuel Durboraw, Esq., of Mt. 
Joy Twp., which took place on the Sabbath last.  His name had so fully the confidence of 
his friends and the public as his name was ever connected with a high character and 
integrity and uprightness and on one ever dared to cast aspersions on his name.  He served 
very reputably in the legislature of this state for two sessions; and the almost continual 
resort to him for settlement of estates, showed the general confidence of his integrity.

Word Wanted:
Andrew Winemiller, idiot, escaped from the Alms House of Adams Co., about six weeks 
ago.  Since that time he as not been heard from though every effort has been made to 
discover his whereabouts.  His age is probably between 40 and 45 and his height is 5’8”.  
He does not speak English and has a downcast look when spoken to.  Any person giving

We regret to learn that during the thunderstorm on Tuesday night, George Yeagy, residing 
near Petersburg, was struck by lightening and almost instantly killed.  We understand that 
he had been reading and laid down near the stove for a while to rest.  The lightening struck 
into the chimney and was communicated to where he lay by the stove pipe.  Two of his 
children were lying by his side but were not injured.  All other members of his household 
escaped.

died within a few weeks of each other of smallpox.

June 21, 1864

Adam Taney, Jr., residing in Fairfield, met with a serious accident a few days ago while 
trying to open a shell found in one of the fields.  It exploded and some of the fragments 
struck him in eh feet which may cripple him for life.

July 5, 1864

A letter from a friend in Missouri gives us the information that an old citizen of this county, 
Daniel Arendt, was drowned on the 30th April last in crossing a creek with the U.S. Mail.  
There was a mystery about it, says our informant, as the stream was fordable all day and he 
was well acquainted with the ford.  Nothing has transpired, however, to explain the matter.

July 12, 1864

Died, on the 30th (?) ult., Rebecca, daughter of John and Sophia Maring(?) of Cumberland 
Twp., aged 24(?) years, 29(?) days.

A melancholy accident occurred on the evening of the 30th ult., resulting in the almost 
immediate death of George Gardner of Latimore Twp.  He was about returning a corn 
sheller belonging to a neighbor and when quite near his destination, one or more teams 
came along the road and in endeavoring to make room the horse made a sudden jerk, 
throwing the sheller and Mr. Gardner violently to the ground, the machine striking him on 
the breast and producing injuries on other parts of his body.  He lived but a few minutes 
after.  He was in his 69th (?) year; was a deaf mute and was weak minded but was able to do 
ordinary work on the farm and was therefore, useful to those with whom he resided.

A few days ago, Mr. John McMasters of Hamilton Twp., was cutting grain with a reaper 
and while in the act of repairing some machinery, which had broken, his horse became 
unmanageable and his legs were caught in the knives of the reaper, cutting one almost off 
and injuring the other badly.

We regret to announce that Dr. J.N. Smith of Butler Twp., was suddenly taken ill at his

was caused by an affliction of the heart.  He was highly respected and had had a large 
practice in his profession for many years.  His age was about 57(?) years.

October 25, 1864

Stewart Miller, of Straban Twp., came to a sudden and melancholy death on Friday week.  
He, with his wife, had just returned from a visit to his father in Whitestown and while 
taking a loaded gun out of the buggy, the piece by accident went off, the charge entering his 
body and killed him instantly.  His age was about 27 and he leaves a wife and child to 
mourn his sudden departure.

Died, on the 21st Sept., near Whitestown, Huntington Twp., John Wesley Weidner, aged 
13(?) years, 16(?) days.

Died, on 29th Sept., Hettie Elizabeth Weidner, aged 15(?) years, 4 days; died, on 30th Sept., 
Sarah Rosanna Weidner, 4 years, 7 months.  Both are the children of Stephen Weidner.  
The disease which proved so fatal to this family was diphtheria.

J. Kersey Cook, as trustee, has sold the mill property in Menallen Twp., with 178 acres of

J.B. Danner and Charles B. Polley as executors, have sold the mansion property of Daniel 
Polley, deceased, for $8,000 cash—at the rate of $35 per acre.  Purchaser is Emmanuel 
Koller.

J.B. Danner and John Horner as executors have sold the mansion property of John Guinn, 
deceased for $3,300 at the rate of about $24 per acre.  Purchaser is Eli Horner. 

They have also sold part of Round Top belonging to the same, in lots, varying from $20 to 
$24.50 per acre.
