BOWLDER, Jan. 1. - Among the recent guests noticed at the home of Mr. John Thomas were Mr. George Weaner and wife, of Bendersville, Mr. Emory Fidler and wife, of York, and Messrs. Martin and Willis Thomas. Mr. Charles Stauffer, accompanied by his friend, Will Chapman, spent Monday in Harrisburg. Mr. Harry Raffensperger and wife spent Sunday with Mr. Amos Mummert and wife. Mr. Henry Gise and wife, of East Berlin, spent Christmas with the former's parents, Mr. Peter Gise and wife. Among the recent guests noticed at the home of Mrs. Weems Neely, were Mr. Jacob Neely, of York, Mr. and Mrs. Everitt Myers, of Smithsport, and Ella Raffensperger. Quite a pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr. Joseph Jacobs sometime ago. Among those present were: Mamie and Tora Crist, Minnie and Katie Kemper, Ollie and Elsie Larsh, Mary Kimmel, Daisy Decker, Minnie Kimmel, Bessie Naylor, Alma, Maggie and Georgie Pittenturff, Emma Pittenturff, Mr. and Mrs. Felix, Lamon Felix, Frank Naylor, Robert Reigle, Willis Crist, Allen Crist, Ira Slaybaugh, Jobe Starry, Wilmot Bosserman, Elmer Deardorff and Harry Pittenturff. Granite Hill Items. GRANITE HILL, Jan. 1. - Chas. Gardner, wife and child, of near York Springs, and Wm. Osborn, wife and child, of Boiling Springs, spent some time with their parents, Henry Osborn and wife, near this place. Samuel Heck, of Gettysburg, visited Wm. Winters, near this place. Robert K. and Carrie K. Bell, of this place, visited at W. A. McIlhenny's on Christmas. Edward Rindlaub, of York, spent several days with his mother, Mrs. Mary J. Rindlaub, of this place. E. E. Rinehart, wife and family visited at P. W. Beamer's, near Hunterstown. Emma Beamer of this place is visiting friends at Harrisburg. M. B. Miller is visiting in Baltimore. Wm. Stallsmith, of this place, visited relatives near New Oxford. Maggie and James Twomey, of this place, visited their sister, Mrs. Herman Brewer, of Port Deposit, Cecil county, Md. Hampton Items. HAMPTON, Jan. 1. - Emory Miller and wife, of Biglerville, were the guests of B. M. Miller and family on Saturday and Sunday. Tillie Howe was visiting her parents near Heidlersburg last week. Henry Garber and wife, of near Dillsburg, were visiting Calvin Garber and family a few days last week. Edward Montour, of Baltimore, is visiting at Mrs. Starry's. Lemuel Myers, of this place, and Maud Wierman, of near York Springs, were visiting friends in Baltimore for some time. Rev. H. A. Straub, M. E. minister of York Springs, will hold service in the Union church at this place Sunday evening. M. D. Neidrick is erecting a dwelling house on the lot recently bought of Em--- --ronister. Two Taverns Items. TWO TAVERNS, Jan. 1 - L. D. Miller and family were visiting at J. T. Sherman's last Sunday. Henry Sachs was in Baltimore last week. Rev. Weidler and family were visiting at C. Wolford's on Christmas. Minnie Flickinger, organist of Grace church, was presented on Christmas night with a gold watch, from her friends, for playing the organ for Sunday school and church. Ada M. Baker has been elected teacher of Two Taverns school. J. D. W. Deardorff was the teacher before. Ida Pitzer was the guest of Annie Miller last Sunday. Charles R. Appler is visiting friends in Pottstown, Pa., this week. The Young People's Society of Christian Endeavor received quite a number of new members on Sunday evening, Dec. 20th. They number now about 70 members. Willis Hartman is home on a short vacation, also Harry Hartman is home over the holidays. Fountain Dale Items. FOUNTAIN DALE, Jan. 1 - Irusa Wills is reported very ill. J. D. Sanders and Miss Creager, of Ringgold, Md., visited friends in the Dale on Sunday. Harry Shryock and wife, of -arney, were the guests of Mrs. H. C. Shryock, on Sunday. Our school is closed this week, owing to sickness in the teacher's family. Mrs. Amanda Pittenger is visiting friends at Oxford. Prof. Wm. Spath, of Fairfield, was in the Dale Wednesday. M. C. Tresler is going into the churn business. With this new machine he says he can have butter in three minutes. Simon Cline wears a broad smile, its a girl this time. Robt. Troxell and wife and Geo. Warren and wife, of Motters, spent the holidays with friends at this place. Union Township Notes. SELLS STATION, Jan. 1 - Preaching at Christ church Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m by the pastor, Rev. F. S. Lindaman. The Christmas service at Christ church was well attended and a good program was rendered. We can't understand that Christmas has come and gone and New Year is at hand. Santa Claus made his appearance at Valley Grove school last Thursday afternoon and treated each one of the scholars to a pack of candy and an orange. The teacher received from the school a handsome band ring. A large crowd attended the Christmas exercises at Felty's school house last Saturday evening. Quite a number of songs and recitations were well rendered by the school. After which the school was treated. The teachers and scholars surely deserve credit for the program which they rendered. O. L. March, of York, was in this vicinity last Tuesday on business. The killing of large porkers still continues. Reuben Wildasin killed two, 487 _ and 440 pounds, and Wm. Wisensale one 427 pounds. Last Monday morning was one of the coldest mornings we had yet this year. The temperature was 7 degrees above Zero. Following are the guests that we noticed at John Basehoar's last Saturday: Dr. V. H. Lillie and wife, of McSherrystown, Michael H. Geisleman and wife, of Centennial, Howard G. Dutters and wife, of near Littlestown. Messrs. Sell and Good, filled their ice house with choice ice last week, the ice being eight inches thick. New Oxford Items. NEW OXFORD, Jan. 1 - Rhoda Swartz, who is attending school at Williamsport, is spending the holidays with her parents. Mark Swartz, professor at the Moravian school at Nazarreth, is home. Annie Himes, of Sworthmore, is spending the holidays at home. Horace Becker and wife, of Hanover, are spending the week with the latter's parents, Mr. Gilbert and wife. Leo Stock, of the University at Washington, spent several days last week with Wm. Steffie, who has been home ill for some time, but is now convalescent. Misses Gross and Campbell, of York, are visiting at Dr. Sheetz's. Marion Peters, of York, was the guest of Annie Himes last week. Harper Himes, of New York, is spending the holidays with his parents. McSherrystown Letter. MCSHERRYSTOWN, Jan. 1 - John Yantis and his wife, of Fourth street, celebrated their tenth or tin wedding on Saturday evening. A large number of guests ensembled and remembered them with gifts suitable for the occasion. Wm. And Harry Hombach and sister Bessie, are visiting their sister, Mrs. Collins. Peter Swisher and wife, of Round Top, spent several days with their son, Calvin Swisher and family, on Church street. Frank Martin, wife and daughter, spent Christmas with friends in Littlestown. Charles H. Busbey won the beautiful sleigh chanced off for the benefit of Holy Trinity Catholic church, his number being 118. The congregation realized $37.50(?) from the chances. A large and intelligent audience gathered in St. Paul's Lutheran church on Thursday evening to hear the rendition of a service called "Our Prince of Peace." The exercises were of a high order and reflected much credit upon the school. J. A. Poist, of this place, has purchased the old Martin Kindig farm, at the edge of town, from Emory K. Eichelberger on private terms. John Carbaugh returned home on Tuesday from John Fuhrman's, were he had bee working on the farm, suffering with inflammatory rheumatism. Emory Harper and wife are visiting friends in Philadelphia. Additional Littlestown Items. Mr. I. S. Ditzler, our popular McSherrystown correspondent, gave us a pleasant call this Friday morning. The gentleman is spending the day with his uncle, Mr. Joseph Krumrine(?) near town. Mr. John A. Rebert and family, formerly of this place is now located at Berkley Springs, W. Va. Mr. Rebert is a member of the firm of the Berkley Springs Handle Company, manufacturers of all kinds of handles and spokes. Mr. M. J. Spalding, of New York city, spent several days of the season's vacation at his home in this place. The gentleman is a graduate of THE INDEPENDENT office, and we naturally take just pride in his gradual advancements. Dr. J. G. Watson and family have left for Connelsville, Huntingdon county, their future home. The Doctor is not only a physician of excellent repute but a clever gentleman as well. He carries with him the well wishes of numerous friends. Miss Olivia Stem, of Stemton, Pa., is spending several weeks with the family of her brother, Rev. Geo. Stem. By her amiable disposition and accomplished manners, Miss Stem has won for herself many warm friends who will always welcome her return to our town. Mummasburg Items. MUMMASBURG, Jan. 1 - Joseph Shultz, of Frederick city, was visiting friends here. Messrs. Flickinger and John Wentz, of near Hanover, were in town last week. Mrs. Leah Lady and sons, Willis and Milton, spent X-mas with Curtis Fohl and family, near Sunnyside. Reuben Slaybaugh, of Menallen, spent several days in town last week. John R. Kunkle and wife spent Thursday of last week with Abram Kunkle's near New Chester. Sarah J. Miller, of Arendtsville, visited her brother, N. Miller last week. Mrs. Leeper and children, of York, are visiting her parents, Joseph Hummer and wife. The remains of Wm. Funt, of Cashtown, were interred in the Mennonite burial grounds last Sunday. He was aged 84 years, 2 months and 15 days, and leaves a wife, six children, forty-five grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren to mourn their losses. Teena Stable was visiting friends at Fayetteville. Martin Wisler and wife have gone to Lancaster. Mrs. Wisler expects to have a growth cut out. Mr. Pressel was the guest of Eva G. Hartman. Anderson Lentz and wife, of Menallen township, spent Monday at J. T. Hummer's.
