Worry over financial difficulties is said to have caused his act. He walked out of the house and went down to the wagon-shed where, a few minutes later, he fired the shot which he hoped would end his life. Mrs. Reed heard the report of the revolver and rushed to his side in time to prevent a further attempt at self destruction. Doctors Glenn and Trout of Fairfield were summoned. After Mr. Reed was carried into the house he protested that he did not want to live and that his great desire was to end all. He is about fifty years of age. Besides his wife he has three children. He resides on the old Reed farm about three and one-half miles from Fairfield. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, October 19, 1912
