MET DEATH IN CLAY PIT

Child Of Joseph Carbaugh Buried Beneath Falling Mass Of Earth.

Fatal Accident Happened at Berlin Junction on Saturday Morning – Head Was 
Crushed and One Leg Mangled – Death Instantaneous.

Caught beneath a falling mass of clay and shale, in the clay quarry at the W. H. 
Carbaugh brick yards, near Berlin Junction, last Saturday morning, Clement, the 
9-year-old son of Joseph Carbaugh, was instantly killed.

The lad, in company with a little sister, was herding two cows near the brick 
yard, when the lad went down into the clay quarry, a distance of about 20 feet 
deep.  At this juncture, a large mass of clay and shale from the top of the 
quarry gave way, and fell upon the boy completely covering him.  Several men, 
who were nearby, removed the loose earth, but found the lad beyond human aid.  
His head was crushed and one foot mangled.  Death was instantaneous.

The funeral took place this forenoon.  A requiem mass was solemnized in the 
Church of the Immaculate Conception at New Oxford at 9 a.m. by Rev. Fr. Shields.  
Interment in the Catholic cemetery.

Mr. and Mrs. John Carbaugh and niece, Miss Emma Carbaugh, of this place, 
attended the funeral.
