Hersh, in his 84th year, one of the oldest business men in Pittsburg, died yesterday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law, Wharton McKnight, in Allegheny. Until a little over a year ago he was active in business, and since his retirement his health has steadily failed. His last serious illness lasted about two weeks. Mr. Hersh was born in Gettysburg, February 21, 1820, and came to Pittsburg in 1811. (trascriber note: dates typed as in newspaper) For a number of years Mr. Hersh conducted a store at Fourth Avenue and Market Street, and was burned out by the big fire of 1845. He was a partner in the firm of Clark & Thaw, which for years conducted the transfer business at the Duquesne Depot. Mr. Hersh remained as transfer agent for the Pennsylvania Company until the order retiring all employees over 70 years of age went into effect about a year ago. He was president of the Diamond National Bank for years, resigning about a year ago. At one time he was president of the Pittsburg and Birmingham Street Railway Company. In politics Mr. Hersh was a Republican and was a delegate to the convention that nominated Abraham Lincoln. Evening Herald, Hanover, PA, December 5, 1903
