Cause of Death Is Unexplained. Gettysburg, Nov. 25 – The mysterious deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond E. Jarrett, who were found dead in bed at their home near St. Louis, are still unexplained, according to word received by friends and relatives here, where Mrs. Jarrett lived before her marriage. He maiden name was Lydia M. Underwood, and the family lived in the vicinity of York Springs for a number of years. According to a special dispatch received here there was every indication that the couple had been dead for several days. Neighbors had noticed gas lights burning in the house since Friday of last week. The bodies were found Wednesday, when entrance was gained to the residence. Two gas heaters were burning, the one in their bedroom and the other in an adjoining room and the air was stifling when the police entered. There was nothing to indicate suicide. A St. Louis physician, in an interview, said that Jarrett and his wife recently had been suffering from the effects of stomach derangement supposed to have been caused by unwholesome food and that he had prescribed medicine to be used by both of them. This medicine was harmless, he said, and not an opiate. He also said the food poisoning would not have caused death. Neighbors said that recently Mrs. Jarrett had been extremely nervous and subject to attacks of hysteria. An inquest has been postponed to await the reports of chemists and physicians performing autopsies. Mrs. Jarrett was the third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Underwood, who moved from Center county in 1895, to the Brandon farm, between York Spring and Idaville, now owned by J. L. Butt, Esq. Miss Underwood was educated in the public schools of the county and later was graduated from the normal school at Shippensburg. She taught for two years near Philadelphia, and then went to the Philippine Islands to engage in educational work. It was there that she met Lieutenant Raymond E. Jarrett, and their wedding followed. He received his discharge after that World war and since then they had lived in Missouri. The Underwood family left this vicinity about seventeen years ago, but, after his wife’s death, Mr. Underwood returned here and for a long time was employed by Frederick E. Griest on his orchard property at Flora Dale. He is now living in Franklin Gove, Illinois. Adams County Independent – Friday, November 26, 1920
