NEELY Was One of Adams County’s Most Prominent Citizens Thomas G. Neely, vice president of the Gettysburg National Bank, president of the Gettysburg Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and one of Adams county’s most prominent citizens, died Saturday morning at his home in York Springs, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis which he received last Sunday. Mr. Neely was aged 78 years, 2 months and 21 days. Mr. Neely was born in Franklin township, York county, April 24, 1838, a son of James H. and Mary Godfrey Neely. He received a common school education, attended private schools, and the academy at New Bloomfield. He worked on the farm and taught school in Huntington township for four years. In 1886 he was appointed assistant revenue assessor and served for two years. He was elected a justice of the peace in March, 1869, and served for two years until the fall of 1871, when he resigned. He was elected prothonotary of Adams county in October, 1871, and again in November, 1874, serving two terms. Mr. Neely was active in Democratic politics and was a delegate to the national convention which met at St. Louis and nominated Samuel J. Tilden for president. He was frequently a delegate to Democratic State conventions and was chairman of the Democratic county committee from 1876 to 1882. In January, 1879, he was appointed bank assessor for Adams county. In 1885 he was appointed deputy revenue collector and held the position for five years. He was again elected justice of the peace in February, 1886. He was engaged in farming in Huntington township until a few years ago, when he moved to York Springs, where he spent the last years of his life. Mr. Neely was elected a director of the Gettysburg National Bank on January 14, 1890, and served continuously up to the time of his death, acting as its vice president since 1905. He was president of the Gettysburg Mutual Fire Insurance company and president of the board of Sunnyside cemetery, York Springs. Mr. Neely’s wife was Miss Margaret Dicks, before her marriage. She died four years ago and he leaves these children: Mrs. E. W. Cashman, York Springs; Dr. Charles G. Neely, Philadelphia; Edgar L. Neely, Prescott, Wisconsin; and Mrs. D. A. Gardner, of Withrow, Washington. His only brother, James R. Neely, died several years ago.
