All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/adams/ _______________________________________________ Cornelius Nitchman Cornelius Nitchman, a Civil War veteran and a pensioner, died at his home on Penn Street at 11:30 a.m. July 17 after an illness of seven weeks from a complication of diseases. The deceased had been in ill health for more than a year, being a sufferer from asthma, which finally affected his nervous system. He was aged 73 years, 3 months and 6 days. Mr. Nitchman was a native of Adams County, having been born and reared in Reading Township, near East Berlin. After quitting the farm, he worked as a day laborer in East Berlin for a number of years, moving to this place, with his family about 16 years ago. He was a son of the late David and Barbara (Chronister) Nitchman, and was married to Miss Susan Heltzel, of near Bermudian, who survives him, together with the following children: John H. and Charles Nitchman, of Baltimore; Mrs. Barbara E. Kirschman, of Reading; Mrs. George H. Forney, of Hanover, and William H. and Paul E. Nitchman, at home. He was the last surviving member of his family. The deceased was a member of Co. I, 56th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and served under Capt. Samuel H. Williams in the war of the Rebellion. Funeral from his late home Tuesday, July 20 at 10 a.m. where services were conducted by Rev. A. M. Heilman, of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
