Mr. Scharf had led an eventful life. He was born in Germany but left that country when he was only fourteen years old and had been in hotel work ever since then, first in Paris and London and then, when he was 25 years old, coming to this country. At Philadelphia he was identified with the old Bellevue hotel. In 1893 he managed the White Horse Inn at Chicago during the fair. Later he engaged in the hotel business in Omaha and San Antonio, and was also with the Aldine and Continental hotels in Philadelphia. For a part of his life he was steward of various clubs, including the Detroit club, and the Racquet and Merion Cricket clubs, of Philadelphia. He had been a resident of Gettysburg since 1914 and since 1917 had been a member of the Hotel Gettysburg company. He leaves his wife, a daughter, and two sons; and a sister.
