Seiss, Lived in Littlestown Over 50 Years. Dr. Raymond S. Seiss, one of the leading physicians of Littlestown for over half a century, died at the home of his son, Dr. F. H. Seiss, in Taneytown, on Feb. 17, from pneumonia, at the great age of 94 years, 8 months and 10 days. He was born near Emmitsburg June 7, 1825. He was a brother of the eminent Lutheran devine of Philadelphia, Rev. Jos. A. Seiss, D.D., LL.D. He graduated at the University of Maryland Medical School in 1852, and began the practice of medicine at Graceham, where he married Miss Angelina S. Gernand. In March, 1855, he settled in Littlestown and began the practice of his profession and conducted a drug store and remained there until crippled from rheumatism. He moved to Taneytown 12 years ago. Mrs. Seiss died there eight years ago. After the battle of Gettysburg he dressed the wounds and attended many of the Union soldiers, a large number of whom were brought to his office for surgical treatment. He was appointed in 1863, and served as surgeon of the enrolling board for the Sixteenth Congressional District of Pennsylvania until March 18, 1864. The doctor was one of the prime movers in incorporating the borough of Littlestown and when it received its charter, and at ten different times was elected its burgess. To his energetic administration was largely due most of the grading of the streets and other public improvements. He was the nominee of the Republican party, in 1872, for the Legislature, but failed at the election. The doctor was president of the Adams Co. Medical Society for three terms. The funeral was held Friday. The body was taken to Littlestown, and interment made in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Rev. L. B. Hafer, of Taneytown, officiating. He leaves one son, Dr. F. H. Seiss, of Taneytown, Md. Gettysburg Compiler – Saturday, February 28, 1920
