Shaffner, nee Miss Emma Jane Gutelius, of this place, was burned to death last Saturday morning at her home in Carlisle. It is believed by her son, the only other occupant of the house, that Mrs. Shaffner got out of bed and struck a match in order to ascertain the time, and that her clothing caught afire. She died in a few minutes and before her son could do anything to save her. Mrs. Shaffner was 75 years of age, and one of Carlisle’s best known church workers. For years she had charge of the work in the county jail among prisoners. She is survived by one son, John Shaffner, who lives at home, and two daughters, Miss Dorothy, of Washington, D. C., and Mrs. Thos. Shay, of Philadelphia, and by one sister, Miss Gutelius, of Westminster. Miss Belle Gutelius, deceased, late of this place, was also a sister.
