Shermeyer Clair E. Shermeyer, 77, of Gettysburg, died Wednesday, June 25, .. in Hanover Hospital. Born Feb. 2, 1920 in York, he was a son of the late Samuel and Nora Shaffer Shermeyer. He was predeceased by his wife, Pauline E. Moore Shermeyer, in 1995. ... He served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He is survived by four daughters, Norma J. Woerner and Emma V. Krichten, both of Gettysburg, Evelyn S. Heiliger of Manchester, Md., and Mary C. Beachtel of Littlestown; five sons, Richard E. Shermeyer of Abbottstown, James L. Shermeyer of York, Anthony J. Shermeyer of Hanover, Michael L. Shermeyer and Mark A. Shermeyer, both of Gettysburg; 28 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dale Shermeyer and Edward Shermeyer, both of Dover, and William Shermeyer of Gettysburg; and five sisters, Ferne Holtzapple of York, Jean Spahr, Madeline Livingstown, Sheila Miller and Ruth Fogle, all of Dover. He was predeceased by one son, Brian D. Shermeyer. Funeral services will be held Saturday with Mass of Christian Burial in St. Joseph's the Worker Catholic Church, Bonneauville, with his pastor, the Rev. Brian Conrad, as celebrant. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Catholic War Veterans, Bonneauville.
