Augustus Smith died last Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, at his late home on West King street. He was aged 72 years, 7 months and 15 days. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Smith, and was born in Germany township. For many years he conducted a farm and a huckster route in that township. About 37 years ago he moved to Littlestown and for several years continued the huckstering business. Later he entered a partnership with the late Geo. F. Krug and conducted the Littlestown Flour Mill and Warehouse. He retired from active business about five years ago. Always interested in the welfare of the town Mr. Smith served several terms as Councilman and resigned from the present board just a short time prior to his death. The deceased was twice married, the first time in 1876 to Miss Annie G. Staub, who died in 1882. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara L. Smith, who died in July, 1919. Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Thos. A. Smith, of York; Robert J. Smith, of this place; Francis Smith, of Sparrows Point; Mrs. Jos. Foin, of Hanover; Miss Addie, at home, and Miss Lillian, of the Mercy Hospital, Baltimore. The funeral was held Monday morning with services in St. Aloysius church, Rev. W. J. O’Callaghan officiating, assisted by Rev. Nichols, of Bonneauville, as deacon; Rev. Gabriel, of Paradise, as sub-deacon, and Rev. McGovern, of McSherrystown, as master of ceremonies. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at edge of town. Members of the Town Council acted as honorary pallbearers. Adams County Independent – Saturday, March 26, 1920
