All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/adams/ _______________________________________________ Funeral service for Edward McSherry Spalding, who died at his home on South Queen street last Thursday morning, were held in St. Aloysius’ Catholic Church on Monday morning. Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. James Spalding, O. S. B., a son of the deceased; Rev. Linus Brugger, O. S. B., was deacon, Rev. Martin J. Steffy, sub-deacon, and the pastor, Rev. W. J. O’Callaghan, master of ceremonies. The sermon was delivered by Rev Frank Welch. Other priests in the sanctuary were: Revs. William Howard, of Hanover; August Reudter, D. D., and John J. McGovern, of McSherrystown; Bede Hornick, O. S. B., of Baltimore; Mark Stock, of Gettysburg; George J. Breckel and James McGrath, York. The children’s choir sang the mass. After the Mass William H. Eckenrode, a nephew of the deceased, sang a solo “I will Not Be Long.” Miss Mary E. Smith, a niece of the deceased, presided at the organ. Interment was made in the Catholic cemetery, at edge of town. The pall bearers were: Messrs. Benjamin J. Bauhaus, Edward J. Althoff, John V. Ulrich, William F. Starr, Elmer D. Buckey, and James Kelly. Edward Spalding was one of the oldest residents of this town, and the last of the well-known Maryland family of that name. He was born at the old Spalding homestead at edge of town, July 31st, 1829. He lived in the same house in this town for over 50 years. He was a son of the late Henry and Maria (Hughes) Spalding. His wife, Agnes Catherine Klunk, died 13 years ago. He is survived by the following children; Rev. James Spalding, O. S. B., pastor of Holy Cross Church, Spangler, Pa.; Sister Sylvia Spalding, Marillae Seminary, Normandy, Mo.; Misses Regina Gertrude and Addie Marie, at home, and Maurice J. Spalding, of New York City. Among those from out-of-town at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Maurice J. Spalding, of New York City; Mr. and Mrs. James Doll, Frederick; John Hemler, Baltimore; Edward Noel, John Hemler, Mrs. Austin Noel, Misses Mary and Helen Smith, Mrs. V H. Lilly and daughter Gertrude, Joseph Klunk, of McSherrystown; Mrs. Frank Brenner, Hanover; Mrs. Henrietta Hemler, sons Harry and Francis, Allentown; William H., Mary and Marguerite Eckenrode, York.
