York Spring Civil Engineer and War Veteran Passes Away. Colonel William Warren Stewart, one of York Springs most prominent citizens, died Saturday, March 18, in the Chambersburg hospital, after a long sickness. He was 79 years, 8 months and 10 days old. Colonel Stewart received his early education at Cumberland Institute and Juniata academy. From 1857 to 1859 he was a member of a corps of United States engineers engaged in surveying government lands in Nebraska. After his return he was in the employ of the Adams Express company in Baltimore, returning to York Springs in May, 1861, and enlisting the following month with Company K, First regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers Reserve Corps. He was advance rapidly for efficiency and gallant conduct until on March 15, 1865, he became colonel of the regiment. At the battle of Gettysburg he was with his original command, at that time being lieutenant- colonel of the regiment which occupied Little Round Top and played a prominent part in the battles. After the surrender of Lee he was assigned to command the post at Harper’s Ferry and was mustered out Aug. 24, 1865. For gallant conduct at North Anna river, he was brevetted brigadier general, dating from March 15, 1865. At the close of the war he returned to York Springs and during the remainder of his life followed the profession of civil engineering, his late years being devoted to the service of the Cumberland Valley railroad. Colonel Stewart was never married and he leaves one brother and four sisters: Captain D. M. Stewart, of York Springs; Miss Sallie Stewart and Miss K. Stewart, of Chambersburg; Mrs. Liberty Rutters, of Philadelphia, and Mrs. McKee of near Pittsburgh. The Hanover Herald – Saturday, March 25, 1916
