Tawney Newton Amos Tawney, for the past eight years a resident of Gettysburg, died last Saturday, following an extended illness from a complication of diseases. His age was 71 years, 3 months and 13 days. The deceased was a son of the late Abraham and Catherine Tawney, and was born in Mt. Joy township, Adams county, October 22, 1844. He lived the greater part of his life in Mt. Pleasant township, where he was successfully engaged at farming until his removal to Gettysburg. Mr. Tawney was married to Miss Clara Stallsmith, a daughter of the late Daniel Stallsmith, Straban township, and she survives together with two sons and two daughters: Mrs. Albert Whisler and Clinton Tawney, Mt. Pleasant township; Charles B. Tawney, Modesto, Cal., and Miss Carrie Tawney, at home. One sister, Mrs. Alfred Rinehart, Mt. Pleasant township, survives. Deceased was for many years president of the Liberty Independent Fire Insurance company and was the last surviving charter member of that organization.
