All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/adams/ _______________________________________________ Charles Porterfield Krauth Walter, one of the oldest citizens of Biglerville, and prominent in the history of that town, died on Wednesday from apoplexy aged 82 years, 10 months and 20 days. He began life as a stone mason and lost an eye at the work, then became a carpenter and contractor and built and repaired 13 churches in the county, Wenksville, Methodist, Bender’s Flohr’s, Arendtsville and a church at East Berlin and York Springs. He was a school director in Butler township for a number of years and was postmaster of Biglerville for 12 years, giving away to the appointment of his son, H. U. Walter. He was a veteran of the Civil War, a member of Co. G, 138th Pa. Vol. Regt. And participated in the battles of Manassas Gap, Rappahannock, Mine Run, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Bermuda One Hundred, Smick’s Gap, Charlestown, Smithfield, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, Newmarket, Cedar Creek, Sailor’s Creek and the Fall of Petersburg. At Cedar Creek, October 10, 1864, he was wounded in the hand. He was mustered out in Harrisburg on June 23, 1865. He was a member of Corporal Skelly Post of the G. A. R. here. He leaves a wife and three sons, H. U. Walter, of Biglerville, John A. Walter, of Orrtanna, and Ambrose Walter, of Boiling Springs. The funeral will be on Saturday at 12:30 with services by Rev. S.
