STATE OF PENNSYLVANIA Allegheney County / SS
At the City of Pittsburgh, in the County of Allegheny, in the Commonwealth of 
Pennsylvania, on MONDAY the 1st day of OCTOBER in the year of our Lord one 
thousand eight hundred and 49, JAMES LOWRY a native of IRELAND came before me, 
DANL MCCURDY Clerk of the Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace for 
the county aforesaid, and filed the declaration of his intention to become a 
citizen of the United States, agreeably to the provisions of the Act of 
Congress of the United States in such cases made and provided, as follows:
I JAMES LOWRY do SWEAR that it is my bona fide my intention to become a 
citizen of the Unite States, and that I do hereby renounce and abjure forever 
all alligiance and fidelity to any foreignprince, potentate, state or 
sovereinty whatever; and particularly I do hereby renounce and abjure forever, 
all allegiance and fidelity to THE QUEEN OF GREAT BRITIAN AND IRELAND whereof 
I was heretofore to subject.
  Sworn and subscribed before me, this
  1st DAY of OCTOBER A.D. 1849

Additional Comments:
James' signature stared out as an "L" and then appears to drift off the bottom 
of the paper. He then added his last name. This is probably James Jr and he 
became Mayor of Pittsburgh 1864-1866. Family tradition holds that James Sr 
probably never filed a declaration.
