BENJAMIN HENRY, born in Pittsburg, Pa., July 8, 1826. Joined the volunteer service from Illinois in 1861 and by December, 1862, had a command of a brigade of cavalry. Actively engaged in the cavalry service in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Brevetted brigadier and major-general in United States Army in 1867. After the war commanded the district of Indian Territory, and in November, 1886, that of New Orleans. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HERRON p.580 HERRON, GEN. FRANCIS JAY, born in Pittsburg, Pa., February 17, 1837. Moved to Iowa, and 1861, entered Union service at head of the Governor's Grays. Fought at Dug Springs, Ozark, and Wilson's Creek. Promoted to colonel of 9th Iowa, September, 1861, and fought through Arkansas and Missouri campaigns. Wounded and captured at Pea Ridge. Made brigadier, July 29, 1862. Commanded the army at Prairie Grove, Ark., and made major-general. Commanded left wing of forces investing Vicksburg, and afterwards the 13th corps in Texas, and northern division of Louisiana. In May, 1865, received formal surrender of all Confederate forces west of the Mississippi. Resigned commission August, 1865, and became U.S. Marshal in New Orleans, 1867-69, and Secretary of State, 1872-73. Resumed practice of law in New York City. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEGLEY p.581 NEGLEY, GEN. JAMES S., born in Allegheny county, Pa., December 26, 1826. Enlisted, 1846, as private in 1st Pennsylvania Regiment. Served through the Mexican war. Became a horticulturist and farmer. In 1861 raised a brigade of three months volunteers and commissioned brigadier April, 1861. Served with Army of the Ohio, in Alabama and Tennessee campaigns, and defeated the Confederates at Lavergne October 7, 1862. Promoted to major-general for gallantry at Stone River November 20, 1862. Fought at Chickamauga September 19, 20, 1863. Settled at Pittsburg after the war. Elected to Congress 1869-75 and 1885-87. Moved to New York city.
