All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Monday, November 3, 1873 (page 4): CRUSHED IN A TUNNEL On Saturday morning, a boy named Clarence ANDREWS, residing on Fourteenth street, near Mulberry alley in the Ninth ward, attempted to board the Cincinnati express on the Pan Handle road as it was nearing the Try street tunnel near Second avenue in order to ride to the Union Depot. The lad hung on the railings of the platform of a car, and as the train entered the tunnel, he was thrown off and the train passed over his legs, crushing them most horribly. The boy was picked up and taken to Homeopathic Hospital, where he was attended to but he died from his injuries the same evening. Coroner West was notified and empaneled a jury, but adjourned the inquest till this evening at half past seven o'clock at his office on Grant Street. from The Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Tuesday, November 4, 1873 (page 4): CLARENCE ANDREWS' DEATH Last evening Coroner West concluded the inquest in the case of the boy, Clarence ANDREWS, who was run over by the Cincinnati express at the west end of the Try street tunnel of the Pan Handle Railroad, on Saturday morning last. The conductor of the train, E M GATES, the several brakemen and the baggage-master were all examined, but their testimony showed the accident to have been accidental. John McCOY, the boy who was on the car when ANDREWS was killed, testified that a brakeman pushed him off, but the jury rendered a verdict of accidental death. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Clarence ANDREWS, age 17 years, single, laborer, died November 1, 1873, killed on the PCStL railroad in 2nd Ward; son of John and Agnes Jane ANDREWS; born in Blair County PA; living at Mulberry and 14th street; burial in Union Dale Cemetery on November 3, 1873.
