All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Press dated Monday, March 9, 1896 (page 1): KILLED BY A TRAIN James BOYLE, a river captain, aged 40 years, was run down and instantly killed by a train on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie road in the West End at 7:45 this morning. The accident happened in the rear of Singer and Nimicks mill while BOYLE was walking along the tracks. He failed to heed the warning bell and whistle of the locomotive, and the engineer could not stop in time to prevent the accident. BOYLE had been employed on the Hornet Steamer No. 2 from January 25th to February 21, 1896. He was a member of the seaman's association and held a master's certificate, signed from Wheeling. He had evidently been sick, as his papers showed he had been kept in a hospital at the expense of the seaman's association. It is not known where he lived. The only information obtained was from papers found on the body at the morgue. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: James BOYLE, aged 40 years, single, seaman, died March 9, 1896, killed on the P & L E Railroad. He was buried in Highwood Cemetery on March 14, 1896.
