All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from the Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Wednesday, September 3, 1873 (page 4): A man employed in the iron works of Graff, Bennett & Co, at Girty's Run, yesterday afternoon came to the city for the purpose of joining his wife, who was visiting some of her friends on the hill near the Union Depot. While crossing the track at the transfer depot, a locomotive struck him, knocked him down, crushed his arm and gave some internal injuries, from the combined effects of which he died in less than an hour. W H Devore, undertaker, took the body in charge, and will convey it to his late residence. An inquest will be held this morning. (under an article titled, A Chapter of Calamities) from The Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Thursday, September 4, 1873 (page 4): Yesterday morning the Coroner held an inquest on the remains of Patrick BRETT, whose death, by being run over by a locomotive, was reported yesterday, when a verdict of accidental death was returned. The deceased was thirty-two years of age, and leaves a wife and two children, who reside at Girty's Run. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Patrick BRETT, aged 35 years, married, laborer, died September 2, 1873, killed on the Pennsylvania Railroad near 17th Street; born in Ireland; lived on 28th Street in the 12th Ward; burial in St Mary's Cemetery on September 3, 1873.
