It is said she gave birth to a child a week ago and did not receive proper care. An inquest will be held. from The Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette dated Saturday, June 28 1890 (page 6): WILL BE INVESTIGATED At midnight Mrs Burgess, proprietress of a boarding house, No. 135 Second avenue, called at Central Station and reported that a woman, wife of Frank BROWN, one of her boarders, had died in the house and she could get no undertaker to remove or attend to the body. >From her statements, Inspector McAleese supposed the case might be one of foul play and accompanied by Detective Shore he went to the house to investigate. The husband of the deceased was there, and he said he came from Mann's Choice, near Bedford, Pa., from which place he had brought his wife last August, her maiden name being McKERNEY. Mrs BROWN gave birth to a child a week ago. She was attended by Dr H B Orr, and from that time she was very ill, dying yesterday afternoon of blood poisoning. The child, a healthy boy, is still living. The landlady of the house, Mrs Burgess, blames BROWN with neglecting his wife, compelling her to earn her own living by working almost day and night at the sewing machine. The day her child was born, Mrs BROWN put in a faithful day at the machine. The deceased was a handsome brown-haired woman not over 24 years of age, and her face shows unmistakable evidence of intense suffering. Inspector McAleese decided after investigation that the Poor authorities should take care of the child. He notified the Coroner's office of the case and will await developments. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Ella BROWN, age 24 years 3 months 2 days, married, died June 27 1890, blood poisoning; born in Pittsburgh; lived at 135 Second Avenue, Second Ward; burial in Bellevue Cemetery on June 28 1890.
