She was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Finley, Ohio, and spent most of her youth in Ohio. As a teacher and later as a minister's wife, she lived in several locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania, including Natrona Heights, where she lived many years. A 1930 graduate of Toronto High School in Ohio, she received a two- year teacher training diploma from Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. In 1934 she graduated from Adrian College, Michigan, where she received a degree in English and Latin, and was president of Tri-Delta Sorority. She taught in the Highlands School District and at Amity High School in Ohio. Mrs. Cairns was a member for more than 50 years of Grace United Methodist Church, Natrona Heights, where her husband was a former pastor; Tarentum Book Club; Pennsylvania Teachers Association; Eastern Star for more than 50 years; and charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of the United Methodist Church. She was involved in Christian education programs for children, mission work, summer camps for troubled youth and Bible study. For 38 years, she led the Junior Church Program at Grace United Methodist Church. With her husband, she also served at Central United Methodist Church in Beaver Falls and the Bairdford United Methodist Church in West Deer. Surviving her is a daughter, Cathy Cairns of Ambridge. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Dr. Robert Harlan Cairns, in 1994; her parents, the Rev. Dwight Lyman and Nettie Belle Hughes Custis; and a brother, Robert Custis. Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the ROBERT PETERS FUNERAL HOME INC., 1521 Freeport Road, Natrona Heights. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, Natrona Heights, with the Rev. Lee A. Moore officiating. Private burial will be at Mount Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights.
