CONWAY, believed to be the oldest citizen of North Fayette township, died at his home at Beechcliff, Pa., on Thursday morning, October 16, 1919, at seven o'clock, in his 100th year. On September 3d Mr. CONWAY fell, breaking his right leg, and later it developed into pneumonia which caused his death, after an illness of six weeks. He was born at Donahadee, County Down, Ireland, September 15th, 1920, and was a son of Thomas and Elizabeth HAZLETT CONWAY. November 1847 he was united in marriage in Pittsburgh to Ellinor LEWIS, who was also of Donahadee, and to this union were born five children. Mr. CONWAY was a stone cutter and a mason, all his life, and was a faithful Christian throughout his life. For more than seventy-five years he has been a resident of this county and a member of Montour Presbyterian church. He was a Republican in politics. Although he was born in Ireland he was of Welsh decent. The CONWAY castle in Wales was the home of his ancestors. His great-grandfather was an eminent civil engineer, and was employed by the British government to lay out the city of Belfast, and then honored him by naming a public square and erecting a monument in that city in his honor. His grandfather, Mr. HAZLETT, was a trustworthy employee of the government and was placed in charge of the first lighthouse on the Irish coast. His wife died in 1881. Mr. CONWAY is survived by the following children: Thomas W., Mrs. Ida F. NEELY at home; Robert J., 20th Ward, Pittsburgh; Mrs. Ella SIMS, of Tarentum; Mrs. R. W. BELL, Imperial; Harry T. MCBRATNEY, Supt. Sheet Dept. Allegheny Steel company, Tarentum, Ella CORBETT, Moon Twp., Mrs. Maggie HUGHES, Pittsburgh, children of Mrs. Martha CONWAY MCBRATNEY, deceased; and fourteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. The funeral services were held in the Montour Presbyterian church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. *************************************************************************** Taken from McDonald Pa Outlook 30 Oct 1919 The funeral services of Francis H. CONWAY, who died October 16, 1919 was one of the largest ever held in the Montour Presbyterian Church. The old church was filled until chairs had to be placed in the isles and over 272 people passed the casket. The Rev. A. L. HAIL, pastor of the Montour Presbyterian church conducted the services. Several old friends of Mr. CONWAY, who are over ninety years old, were present at the services. Mr. CONWAY was in his 100th year and had been in good health until he received a fall on September 3rd, 1919 which developed into pneumonia. Children of the Beechcliff School went in groups to the CONWAY home to see their old friend who had passed into the beyond.
