Samuel DUNCAN, a yard conductor, fell upon the tracks and in front of the wheels of an engine. He made a desperate effort to throw himself from the perilous position, but the engine moved too rapidly and in a moment its ponderous weight had passed over him just above the center of the body crushing the pelvic bone and causing the entrails to protrude. In this horrible condition, the man was taken to the South Side hospital, where he lived about three-quarters of an hour, dying about 8:30 o'clock. He was a single man, 26 years of age, and boarded at the corner of Thirtieth street and Cherry alley. His parents live up the Allegheny river and a brother lives in Atcheson, Mo. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Saturday, January 4, 1890 (page 7): ACCIDENTAL DEATH The coroner's jury this morning found that the death of Daniel S DUNCAN, the freight conductor crushed between the wheels of a train yesterday morning, near Sixth street, South Side, on the P, V & C R R, was accidental.
