In attempting to board a car he was thrown beneath the wheels. EDWARDS was 23 years old and single. He lived at 3204 McClurg street. The body was removed to Carnegie morgue. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Sunday, February 20, 1898 (page 17): GROUND TO PIECES A Young Brakeman Meets A Horrible Death On The South Side Wm A EDWARDS, aged 23 years, a brakeman on the Monongahela Connecting railroad, met a horrible death last night at 10 o'clock at the south side end of the connecting bridge. His body was ground to pieces, and was removed to his home at 3204 McClurg street, South Side. EDWARDS was sitting on one of the cars when the train jerked, throwing him beneath the wheels. Fifteen loaded freight cars passed over the unfortunate man, and when found he was horribly mangled. The conductor was in the caboose at the time of the accident, and saw EDWARDS' lantern disappear. He suspected that something had happened and stopped the train to investigate. The crew was visibly affected by the sad affair. EDWARDS was a prominent young man and well known on the south side. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: William Allen EDWARDS, age 21 years, married, brakeman, died February 19, 1898, crushed by train; son of Johnston and Maggie EDWARDS; born in Johnstown PA; buried in a Johnstown PA cemetery. Pittsburgh City Directory (1898) suggests wife's name was Lucy. Census listings suggest father's name was Johnathan.
