All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Daily Gazette dated Wednesday, December 17, 1873 (page 4): KILLED BY A SHIFTER Yesterday, about noon, David M GREEN, yardmaster of the Pennsylvania Railroad, at the outer depot, met with a fatal accident. He attempted to bound the Wall's accommodation which was standing on the track. A train coming in the opposite direction he noticed and stepped on to a siding, and did not see a shifter backing. The engineer saw him but too late, for the ------ has passed over him and killed him before it could be stopped. Deceased was several times before injured, and had a leg broken and an arm amputated at different times. He had been in the employ of the company some eighteen years. He was forty-five years of age and leaves a wife and child residing in Lawrenceville. The remains were taken charge of by Mr Devore, and Coroner McCallin notified and held an inquest, verdict of accidental death was returned. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: David M GREEN, aged 45 years, married, dispatcher, died December 16, 1873, run over by a train of cars in the 12th Ward; born in Shirleysburg, Huntington Co, PA; lived in the 13th Ward; burial in Altoona PA.
