For 40 years he had been in the wholesale drygoods trade in Pittsburg. He began his business career as a member of the firm Wilson, Payne & Co., and gave liberally to charity in an unpretentious manner. He was president of the board of trustees of North presbyterian church, Allegheny, and directed the construction of that congregation's building at Lincoln and Grant avenues. He is survived by his son, James B HAINES Jr. His wife died five years ago.
