He had been walking up the track when an engine struck and instantly killed him. The body was removed to the morgue. HAMILTON was about 65 years of age. He was a member of Post 117 G A R and served during the war as a private in the Ninth Indiana artillery. The body was removed to the morgue where it was identified. He was struck by train No. 4 on the Allegheny Valley railroad and instantly killed. He was employed as an ash man at the Brilliant pumping station. He lived on the Butler street extension. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Alexander J HAMILTON, about 60 years, married, laborer, died February 13, 1897, killed on the AVRR; son of Thomas and Elizabeth HAMILTON, both of Virginia; born in Virginia; lived near the Brilliant Station; burial in Homewood Cemetery on February 16, 1897. Census and city directory listings suggest that his wife is Martha with children Frank, Charles, Blanche, George M, Elizabeth, Myra, Grace, Evaline, and Hazel. Homewood Cemetery lists a Martha L HAMILTON as owner of plots in Section 2, Lots 84 and 85.
