Mrs. Martha Stokes Hamner, mother of our friend and townsman, Mr. H. T. Hamner, manager of the music store in the Masonic temple, died very suddenly at half-past 2 o'clock p.m. at her home in Coulterville, near Pittsburgh, Pa., of asthma or heart failure, aged 74 years. The deceased leaves a husband, Mr. William Hamner, of Coultersville; one son, Mr. H. T. Hamner, of Altoona, above referred to, who was summoned to her bedside yesterday morning, and two daughters - Mrs. Thomas, of Lawrenceville, Pa., and Mrs. Williams, of West Oakland, Cal. Mrs. Hamner was born in Staffordshire, England. Her maiden name was Martha Stokes. She was married at her home and came to this country soon after with her husband, where she has lived a busy, active and useful life. She embraced the religion of Christ at the age of 14 years and for sixty years remained a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. For many years she led a most saintly life, "forever in spirit serving the Lord" and died in the peace and joy which always comes to the good. She possessed many superior qualities of heart and life which won for her a large circle of friends who to-day mourn her loss. She led an active and helpful life, always striving to help and make others happy. As the rose blooms and sheds not its fragrance for itself so Mother Hamner lived not for herself but for others and from her beautiful life there went out a sweet fragrance of love and purity which brightened the homes into which she found her way and lightened and gladdened the hearts of all who knew her. But she is gone from us. The eye, no longer dim, seeks the King in His beauty. The voice, once enfeebled, now joins in the songs of the redeemed. - A FRIEND.
