These were two of the victims of that accident. ** from The Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette dated Monday, October 11, 1880 (page 1): The family of Mr George HETZEL, the well-known artist, also suffers a deep affliction. The eldest son, Charles, who had recently been named a candidate for West Point and who was preparing himself for examination, is among the killed. He had accompanied Miss Mattie TAYLOR to the Exposition, and was sitting beside her when the fearful ---------- came to both of them. His body had been taken to the South Side, with those of the LOVE boys, and he was classed among the "missing" until late in the day (Sunday). No one on the South Side would be likely to recognize him, and his friends had no knowledge that any bodies had been taken so far away. It was finally discovered and identified, but the suspense caused the parents additional pangs. His brother, James, who is employed as a draughtsman at the Westinghouse Air Brake Works, and his sister, Ella, are both among the severely injured. It is reported that they both inhaled the hot steam and may not survive. Miss Ella is a most amiable girl, just ------ into young womanhood, and her injured brother is a most exemplary and studious boy. The fears that both these may be called away add greatly to the grief of hearts already overburdened. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Charles HETZEL, age 19 years, single, died October 10, 1880; son of James and Anna HETZEL; born in Allegheny City; lived in Edgewood; burial in Homewood Cemetery on October 12, 1880.
