He was a member from the Fourteenth ward and death came while he was sitting at his desk. The board was in the midst of a discussion as to the best means providing for the poor. Mr HOLMES was taking an active part in the proceedings, when his head fell forward and he began gasping for breath. Drs McCandless and McKelvey hurried to him, but life was extinct in a few moments. The meeting was immediately adjourned. William HOLMES was 63 years of age, and since young manhood has been connected with the A Garrison Foundry Company. He was one of the best authorities in educational matters in the city. For 21 years he was a member of the Oakland sub-district board, declining a unanimous re-election on account of his health and since February 17, 1877, almost 17 years, had represented the sub-district in the central board. But two members of the central board exceeded him in point of continuous service, Dr W H McKelvey, by two years, and John McKain, by one year. As chairman of the high school committee, he rendered the city school system invaluable service. Mr HOLMES leaves a wife, two sons, and four daughters. Two of his daughters are married, one being Mrs Hillis McKOWN, and the other Mrs G C KUHN. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: William HOLMES, age 63 years, married, died December 12, 1893, of apoplexy; son of John and Mary HOLMES, both of Ireland; born in Ireland; lived at 5th Avenue & Dithridge Street; burial in Allegheny Cemetery on December 15, 1893.
