FOSTER, WIDELY-KNOWN EDUCATOR, DIES -- Noted Teacher Succumbs At 93 -- Began Career in Schools In 1857. PROFESSOR JOSEPH M. FOSTER, 93, of 5713 Callowhill St., died Wednesday night after a brief illness. He was born in Mt. Jackson, Lawrence County, Pa., February 2, 1835. His childhood was spent on a farm where Castle Shannon now stands. Professor Foster was graduated from Jefferson College in 1857, shortly before it became Washington and Jefferson College, and he entered the teaching profession. In the summer of 1865 he resigned a position as principal of the Callensburg, Pa., Institute to answer an emergency call for volunteers following General Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania. The day he was discharged from military service he obtained a position in Collins Township, now East Liberty. In later years he was principal of the public schools in Greensburg and Indiana, Pa., and a professor of Latin and Greek in the old Pittsburgh Academy. Professor Foster was well known in educational circles in Western Pennsylvania for 45 years prior to his retirement. He was married to MISS CATHERINE JANE MOORE of Saltsburg in 1866 and is survived by four children: ELSIE R., MARY E., WILLIAM K. of Crafton, and ERNEST M. FOSTER of Ben Avon. Professor Foster was the last of a family of nine children; most of whom lived to an advanced age, and he survived a sister, MISS HENRIETTA J. FOSTER, by only eight days. Professor Foster was a member of the Highland Presbyterian Church. The funeral services will be held in the Moreland Funeral Home, Highland Ave. and Rippey St., Friday at 8 p.m. Interment will take place at Saltsburg, Saturday morning. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: Microfilm records of the Pittsburgh Press @ Carnegie Library.
