She had just left her home, No. 4?9 Ferry street at 1 o'clock this morning having made ready for a trip to Cincinnati on the Beaver. The Gilmore lay next to the wharf and the Beaver was lashed to it with a few feet of space of open water between the sterns of the respective boats. Whether the poor woman attempted to climb across, deceived by the distance, or whether she made a misstep is not known. She went into the water and her despairing scream aroused the crews of both boats. After some trouble the body was recovered after having been in the water only four minutes. Dr Rousseau of Penn avenue, who had been hastily summoned, made every effort to restore her to life, but the chill of the water had probably caused almost instant death. Her body was removed to the morgue, where it awaits official action. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Tuesday, February 12 1889 (page 5): Mrs Mary JONES of 4-- Ferry street was drowned in the Allegheny river at the foot of Redoubt alley. It was learned that Mrs JONES was a widow, and had a large family of grown up sons and daughters, some of whom are supposed to be located in this vicinity, but are not aware of their mother's death. The deceased at one time lived on Craig street, Allegheny.
