He was one of the best-known river men in the vicinity and the owner of several boats. He leaves five daughters and five sons, the latter being all followers of the river. He was a member of Birmingham Lodge, I O O F. from The Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette dated Thursday, April 17, 1884 (page 5): KEEFER - On Tuesday, April 15, 1884, at 7 o'clock PM, Israel KEEFER, aged 60 years. Funeral from his late residence, 1314 Bingham street, South Side, this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend. from The Pittsburg Commercial Gazette dated Thursday, April 17, 1884 (page 7): Capt I S KEEFER, an old and highly respected towboat man, died at his residence on the South Side yesterday. Deceased commanded and superintended the building of quite a number of towboats during his day. The best boat he superintended the building of, we believe, was the Frank Gilmore. A number of tow boats had their flags at half ----- in respect to the memory of the deceased. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Israel KEEFER, aged 63 years, married, riverman, died April 16, 1884, valve disease of the heart; born in Pittsburgh; lived at 1321 Bingham Street; burial in South Side Cemetery on April 17, 1884. According to census records, wife is Mary with children Ludwig, Isaac, Joseph(1), Lauretta, Allina/Ann, Sarah, Hattie, Israel, Joseph(2), Lilly, and Daniel.
