Beckley police said a man who identified himself as Julius E Lutkus, 36, surrendered here Friday and told them he had killed his wife in Pittsburgh. Later, detectives found a body buried in a shallow grave in the basement of a rooming house where the couple lived on Pittsburgh's North Side. Pittsburgh authorities filed no charge, pending questioning of Lutkus. Nelson Cook, Beckley police radio dispatcher, said Lutkus went to police headquarters twice. Thursday, asking to see the chief. The chief was out both times, however. Cook related that Lutkus said on the Tursday visits that he was hitchhiking to Tampa, Fla., and needed food and lodging. Cook said he arranged a meal and overnight lodging for Lutkus at the Salvation Army. Cook quoted Lutkus as saying he had been attending a trade school in Pittsburgh and was going to Tampa to get a job. Lutkus returned to police headquarters Friday and, officers said, reported the slaying. Patrolman Tom Wooters (?) quoted Lutkus as waying he strangled his wife last Monday, mutilated her with a kitchen knife and then buried the body in an unused coal cellar. The couple's 4-year-old daughter, Julia, is staying with a grandmother, Mrs. Anna Abbot, of near Clairton. Mrs. Lutkus' body was identified by her brother, Robert J. Abbott. *************************************************************************** Charleston Daily Mail, West Virginia 1966-05-09 page 32 PITTSBURGH POLICE TAKE CHARGE OF ACCUSED SLAYER BECKLEY - Detectives returned to Pittsburgh Sunday with 36-year-old Julius E.
