The deceased was engaged in making up a train. He had beckoned to his engineer to come on, and as the locomotive neared the place where he stood, he stepped out of the way onto the main track. A Walls accommodation train came along at that moment and struck him, throwing him with great force against his own engine. His skull was fractured and death followed almost immediately. The remains were removed to Devore's undertaking rooms. The deceased was 42 years old. He lived in Manchester, Allegheny, and had a wife and one child. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: William MAPLE, aged 42 years 8 months, married, brakeman, died November 8, 1882, railroad accident - back broken - killed on Pennsylvania Railroad near 17th Street; born in Jefferson County OH; lived in Allegheny City; burial in Monroeville OH cemetery on November 10, 1882. Census records name the wife as Sarah with daughter Gertrude.
