Mr MATTHEWS was 40 years old and lived at 406 Brighton Road with his wife and family. The home is near the Uniondale Cemetery, about 100 yards from the old toll house. Mr MATTHEWS arose about 6 o'clock this morning as usual. There was noting in his manner to indicate that he contemplated self-destruction, althought (sic) he had been despondent for some time. About 7:15 he retired to his room and a few minutes later the report of a revolver was heard. Members of the family ran to the room and found him on the floor with a bullet wound in his head. He had placed a revolver to his left temple and sent a bullet into his brain. The revolver was lying by his side. He died in a few minutes. The cause of the suicide is not known. from the Allegheny City Death Records: David N MATHEWS, aged 40 years 1 month 21 days, married, coach builder, died April 27, 1903, suicide by shooting; son of Andrew and Elizabeth MATHEWS; born in Allegheny City; lived at rear 139 Taggart Street; burial in Highwood Cemetery on April 29, 1903. NOTES: From census listings, wife is Mary with sons Russell and Clarence and daughter Birdella.
