Conductor McGEARY had taken his train to Pittsburg and came out to Braddock on an accommodation train to visit friends, intending to board the express train at that place for his home, in Connellsville. He attempted to board the train before it stopped and was thrown violently to the ground. He was picked up and brought to McKeesport, but was later removed to Mercy hospital. He sustained several fractured ribs, a serious injury to the spine and numerous cuts and bruises on the head. McGEARY was about 40 years old and leaves a wife and family residing in Connellsville. from The Pittsburgh Press dated Monday, May 16, 1898 (page 4): Robert J McGAREY, a passenger conductor on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, was run over at Braddock on Saturday while trying to board a moving train and died at the Mercy hospital. (under an article title, Heavy Casualty List) from The Pittsburgh Press dated Monday May 16, 1898 (page 9): The conductors and brakemen of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad will send a floral tribute to place on the casket of Conductor R J McGARY, who was killed at Braddock Saturday evening. Mr McGARY was one of the most popular men on the road and was a member of the Elks and Order of Conductors. The remains will be buried from the home of his parents in Cameron, W Va. (under an article titled, Gathered To Rest) from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Robert J McGARY, age 34 years, married, conductor, died May 14, 1898, in Mercy Hospital, fractured spine due to railroad injury; born in West Virginia; burial in Connellsville PA on May 16, 1898. Census suggests that his wife is Susan with children Lucretia and Pearl. Article in Connellsville newspaper also states burial near Cameron, W Va. Article does not name any family but does state that McGARY had a wife and two daughters.
