(under an article titled, Echoes of the Night) from The Pittsburg Press dated Friday, March 12, 1897 (page 7): Frank McKAIN, a freight conductor on the Pittsburg, Fort Wayne & Chicago railroad, was killed about 8:30 last night while coupling cars in the Allegheny yards. The train was shifting cars on a side track. He gave a signal for the engineer to back up to couple on some empty cars. A signal was given that the coupling was made, and the train started. Shortly afterward, McKAIN was missed. A search was made, and the body was found lying on the track. It having been severed in twain. Ten cars had passed over the body. The head and arms were also badly crushed. The body was prepared for burial at Williamson's undertaking rooms on Liberty street, and then removed to his late home, 182 Liberty street, Allegheny. He leaves a wife and two children. McKAIN was one of the first men in Pittsburg to take Koch's remedy for consumption, and is known to have said jokingly to his fellows: "I was never born to die of consumption." from the Allegheny City Death Records: Frederick McKEAN, aged 30 years, married, brakeman, died March 11, 1897, killed on WPRR; was born in Logans Ferry, Westmoreland County, PA; lived at 182 Liberty street; buried at Colfax Station in Allegheny County PA on March 14, 1897. City directories (1896, 1897) list a Fred. K McKEAN, railroader, living at 182 Liberty in Allegheny. Wife was Adelaide Caroline LAPPA; she would marry John E WICKLINE and move to Columbus, Franklin Co, OH. Could only identify one McKEAN child, Ethel.
