Shifting engine No. 500 was preparing to shift on to a siding, to be attached to a long train of empty stock cars, when it was found that the switch was unopen. Brakeman C--l--tine McKIBBEN ran ahead to open the switch, when he caught his foot fast in a frog. Alexander HUGHES, the conductor, seeing the danger of McKIBBEN's position, ran forward to assist him. Both were struck by the engine before either had a chance to escape. The engine and one car rammed over them, and when they were found life was extinct. The bodies were horribly mangled. McKIBBEN was a single man, and resided with his mother at 363 Lacock Street, Allegheny. HUGHES was a married man, and lived on Hiland Avenue, East End. He leaves a wife and two children. An adjourned inquest will be held this morning at ten o'clock. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Celestine McKIBBON, age 22 years, single, died December 1, 1877, railroad accident; lived at 368 Rebecca Street; burial at Gilliten Station PRR on December 2, 1877.
