Mary died at home in Aptos, CA on May 19, 2009 of natural causes. She was 82. Mary was born in Carrick, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Chemistry in 1948. She was a chemist for many years. Mary was an avid Bridge player and loved every kind of music. She played second violin in numerous orchestras. Another of Mary's passions was volunteering for the Literacy Program in Santa Cruz. Mary found teaching English as a second language very satisfying. On numerous occasions she would help her students study for and pass their citizenship tests. Mary had an insatiable desire to learn about other cultures and travelled extensively. Closer to home she loved to garden and entertain. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, George F. Mechlin and a daughter Elizabeth Mechlin. She is survived by sons David Mechlin of Porterville, CA, Thomas Mechlin of Alameda, CA, a daughter and son-in-law Ann and Don Rankin of Watsonville, CA, and two grandchildren Michael Rankin of Aptos, CA, and Jessica Rankin of Watsonville, CA. Mary was loved by many and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 3:30pm at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, 9850 Monroe Ave., Aptos, CA 95003. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary's name to Santa Cruz Volunteer Center for the Literacy Program, 1010 Emeline, Building C, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 or to Habitat for Humanity, 9850 Monroe Ave., Aptos, CA 95003.
