Mr. Merritt worked in the big mill at the tube works yesterday, where he had been employed about the welding furnaces since the establishment of the mill. Soon after 7 o'clock last night he suffered a stroke of paralysis, which at first was thought to be slight. He showed no improvement at midnight and a relative who had been called to the bedside went home. An hour later Mr. Merritt was seized with a coughing spell, and expired at 2 a.m. During the past few years Mr. Merritt had not been constantly employed and worked as he could, receiving a salary for his work which was equivalent to a pension. He was a brother of Mrs. Jacob Gillman, of 328 Sixth Avenue, to whose home the remains have been taken and from where the funeral will take place Friday morning at 10 o'clock. The service will be conducted by the Rev. A. A. DeLarne, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and interment will be made in Richland Cemetery, Dravosburg. One brother, George Merritt, survives him and resides at Altoona. Mr. Merritt was born at Alexandria, Pa., and at the place of his birth enlisted in the United States Volunteer Army, serving from 1863 to 1865. At one time he was a member of Sam W. Black post No. 59, G.A.R., of this city. He was never married and since the war had resided the greater part of his life in this city.
