All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/allegheny/ ________________________________________________ from The Pittsburgh Commercial Gazette dated Friday, December 26, 1884 (page 2): A BRAKEMAN KILLED Henry MILLER, a brakeman on the Allegheny Valley railroad, was instantly killed yesterday morning between 3 and 4 o'clock, on the railroad track between Sixteenth and Seventeenth street. He was employed on the shifting train, and was running along the track between the cars when he was knocked down and run over. He was 47 years old and lived on Forty-fourth street, where he leaves a wife and several children. from the City of Pittsburgh Death Records: Frank E MILLER, age 46 years, married, brakeman, died December 25, 1884, from injuries received on the AV RR; born in New York; lived on Hatrick *; burial in Allegheny Cemetery on December 27, 1884. * Street name may be Hatfield. Hatfield and Cedar (MILLER's address from directories) is one block from 44th Street. City directories suggest wife's name is Ruth. It appears that they had married the previous year (her second marriage) and that Ruth's name prior to their marriage was DAVIS. Ruth has four children: Wilson, David, Amos, and Mary. Allegheny Cemetery site notes that a Frank E MILLER is buried in Section 32, Grave 5911. Harry L PURVIS, 29 years of age, single, brakeman, died September 4, 1899, at West Penn Hospital, crushed while employed as a brakeman; son of James and Phoebe PURVIS; born in Butler Co PA; living in Etna; burial in an Etna PA cemetery on September 7, 1899.
